Panther LR-308

Lazerus2000,
Some very informative posts. Hunting with an original AR-10 would have been something.

The LR-308 aka AR-10 that I have has a 24 inch bull barrell (this thing is big). Since this is a range gun due to it's registration as restricted (Which it shouldn't be, but that's another story) I'm hoping for some really good accuracy. Most seem to hit less than 1 inch at 100, with the right ammo. So we'll see. The mags for this one are apparently compatible with the original AR-10 and the SR-25. I believe they are listed as steel and appear to be well made.
I'll be starting with some regular nothing fancy 155 grain ammo since I have some on hand. I bought a couple of boxes of 165 grain Fusion ammo (boat tailed hunting ammo by federa). After that I'll be trying out the 168, 175 etc grain various match grade stuff and anything on sale that has promise :).

The accuracy reports on these rifles have been very good. Hopefully I won't be disapointed. Also I have a double stage Rock river arms match trigger on the way, and a Panther tactical grip. I plan on replacing the plastic butt pad on the stock with a rubber one to make sure any recoil doesn't wreck my enjoyment. I don't mind recoil as long as hard plastic isn't jabbing into me. After that I'm hoping it will be a real delight to shoot. I've already cleaned it, oiled it etc. Every now and then I go my safe and open it up just to look at it. I just bought a new safe with a keypad on it so this is much easier to do now :).

Well, the RRA match trigger and tactical grip arrived. I'll be getting those put in soon. I'm also going to have a rubber butt pad put on the stock instead of the plastic. That is pretty much all of the add ons/mods for me. Other than using a bipod once in a while.

I made up my mind that I would go with the Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm for this rifle. I have Zeiss rings (made by Warne) on order already. I tried one on at the gun store. It looked really sharp. It was a close call between the Zeiss and Leupold. I've decided on the Zeiss.

I'm looking forward to having this rifle up and going. It may be a few months though. This addiction is very expensive.

Congrats, I have the same rifle. I have put a Elcan and a Magpul stock stock on it. I shot about 500 rounds thru it and the extractor broke. So, I'm going thru the hassle of getting a new one, plus a spare. Also a spare firing pin.

I am firing 147 gr winchester military ammo and can get nice groups, 2-3 inch groups at 200 yards. Never ever a failure to feed, just extraction! lol

It's a great rifle.

Check out this link for a pic.

Did the RRA trigger just drop in without any problems? Where did you get it?

I'm considering a Bushnell 6 x 24 x 50. About $550 on ebay. It's a little bit cheaper the others, but rugged.

That better not happen to mine !!!
I plan on shooting mostely 168 grain match stuff with this one.
I have to put in the trigger group, change the handle to the tactical one and get the scope. I'm looking at spring before I have this one up and running.

Got my LR-308 back today. The tactical grip is on, the RRA 2 stage match trigger was fit in, and I have the rings. I went with Burris "extreme tactical rings". The trigger is very nice. The first stage is so so. Right when you feel the resistance thats where the second stage really shines. Very crisp and nice trigger. A huge improvement over the stock one.
This rifle looks good :D

I was planning on saving up for scopes these next couple of months, but a Swiss Arms PE-90 black, target model has shown up for me, so the scopes will have to wait a few more months. The rifles are a lot harder for me to get than the scopes.

I'm looking at very early spring to shoot this rifle.

A couple pictures of Semi auto .308 goodness.

And why would that be ?
They make one of the most reliable versions out there

and

No DPMS 308 parts fit on anything...

Now I was under the impression that armalite was the odd man out because of the whole m-14 magazine thingy. Dpms lowers fit POF uppers, kac uppers, fulton armoury uppers. Magazines all work the same for all these companies as well.

Armalite is compatible with none of these

The DPMS 308 lower uses standard AR-15 parts except for the front and rear takedown pins and also the bolt catch and screw.

anyway, if an armalite was given to me I would shoot the piss out of it and thank santa, otherwise, it seems there are better options.

Does anyone know where to get a rubber butt plate for the stock? I don't care about the trap door. When I go to shoot this thing, I'd rather have a bit of rubber for recoil rather than the hard plastic. This is a .308 after all and not a .223.

Its a heavy gas operated rifle, recoil is going to be negligible even with heavier 168 & 180gr bullets, the only reason to put on a buttplate extension of any kind is to adjust your length of pull to better fit the rifle to yourself.

I am not sure DPMS fits all those mentionned.

I know Armalite fits Noveske, HK and KAC uppers....

As for mags, u can use the DPMS mags fit in my armalite but the contrary doesnt...

"Brownells even goes so far as to point out in their item description, that the DPMS mag will not fit the Armalite rifle. It will, however, fit the Knights and several others."

one on left is original ar-10/sr 25 mag, one on right is shorty ar 10 mag.
sr-25 reciever on left, ar 10 reciever on right.

I guess I have never handled them all so I can't say for sure,

but thats what I have gleaned from the internet anway.

not really important anyway, unless you are going for some sort of frankenbuild

maybe check that the dpms mags feed properly in your AR-10
