Paper towel for bore cleaning.

I have worked in several paper industries......

Remember paper can be abbrasive, which can be good or bad depending on how you use it.

Considering a LEAD bullet is going down the pipe sometimes at pressures over 25000psi, I wouldn't worry too much abut scratching a barrel with paper towels. ;)

Dumbass:D:D:D:D:D Why do you think lead was in gas

Abstract:
Powdered lead metal exhibits good lubricant properties. It has had limited commercial use as an additive in certain heavy-duty greases and wire-drawing compounds. However, there seems to be no information regarding its behaviour in liquid lubricants

Thank you for your informative responses. I like the idea of using the blue shop towel for bore cleaning, will buy some today and try it out.

Levi Garrett, thanks for the music, I enjoyed "Il Selenzio" very much :)

I windex, toothbrush, paper towel, brake cleaner, paper towel, oil, oily paper towel. Everything comes out squeeky clean and lightly coated. Never seen corrosion, even with much surplus ammo. The paper towel never really goes through dry, not worried about scratching. Wouldn't touch optics with it though.

Used Bounce works great, as does a good (jeez, I was going to say liberal) dose of Fluid Film for corrosive ammo.:p

Ilike the blue towels for cleaning off a gun but for rifle bores, I just buy patches.

I cut my own patches from flannel for awhile, then I realized that I only use abotu $10 worht of patches a year, and they are easy to use, so why not?:D

X2, flannel patches and solvent for me.

I don't use toilet paper, windex, old socks and Grandad's underwear on my guns.

I used to use the blue shop towels cut up into squares and liberally soaked in Butch's to do my primary clean on a dirty bore. I don't anymore, I just use flannel patches...again from Butch's. I agree with Gatehouse, for what you use patch wise, and the associated cost, might as well use the good ones.

They have changed the composition of the blue ship towels over the last 2 years...they are cheaper, and don't hang together well. I use them for other things around the bench, but not as a bore patch.

My reasons for using paper towel was not to save a little bit of money. It was more because I was out of bore cleaning patches, and starting to look for alternatives for cleaning a very dark, and worn 8x57 bore, and since I was already using a paper towel for cleaning the exterior of the gun, thought that the paper towel might as well work for the inside of the as well, and to my surprise, it work much better than expected, and like other gunnutz, I thought it was fun to share my "discovery", and soon found out, that other gun owners had used paper towel for cleaning bore for years :)

I do like using the paper towel for bore cleaning, and bought some of that blue shop towel yesterday, which I, in future bore cleanings, will use in conjunction with the flanel bore cleaning patches.

For the same reasons I used paper towel for a bore cleaning substitute, instead of the "real" stuff, was because I was out of it, I also made a batch of 8X57 cases out of 30-06 cases, because it would take some efforts to find and buy new 8X57 cases, and the reason for that was not to save few dollars, but because I could be resourceful, and use what I had at hand already, and I find that very gratifying :)
