My reasons for using paper towel was not to save a little bit of money. It was more because I was out of bore cleaning patches, and starting to look for alternatives for cleaning a very dark, and worn 8x57 bore, and since I was already using a paper towel for cleaning the exterior of the gun, thought that the paper towel might as well work for the inside of the as well, and to my surprise, it work much better than expected, and like other gunnutz, I thought it was fun to share my "discovery", and soon found out, that other gun owners had used paper towel for cleaning bore for years
I do like using the paper towel for bore cleaning, and bought some of that blue shop towel yesterday, which I, in future bore cleanings, will use in conjunction with the flanel bore cleaning patches.
For the same reasons I used paper towel for a bore cleaning substitute, instead of the "real" stuff, was because I was out of it, I also made a batch of 8X57 cases out of 30-06 cases, because it would take some efforts to find and buy new 8X57 cases, and the reason for that was not to save few dollars, but because I could be resourceful, and use what I had at hand already, and I find that very gratifying
