Parallax on Bushnell

I have a Bushnell fixed power 10x40 scope, according to its website it is "factory-set parallax-free at 100 yards".

However, when I move my head side to side, I see the reticle moves about 1.5" on the target @ 100 yards. Am I doing something wrong?

I'd check it at a more meaningful distance. If it happens to be parallax free at 300 yards or so it might be good for something.

Or you could send it in and be shooting it by next season.;)

Usually with fixed power center fire scopes the parallax is set for 150 yards...

Are you sure the Bushnell information said 100 yards?

So what does actually happen inside a scope when the parallax goes for a chit?

Parallax can only be set for one distance... it doesn't take a chit so to speak. However if something is rattling inside your scope there is something wrong.

You can move the objective lens in or out a smidge (doesn't take much) to adjust parrallax to whatever distance you like. There is usually a locking ring over it. Loosen this and then adjust the objective lens to your liking and retighten the locking ring.

Bushnell doesn't add adjustable parallax on scopes below 11 power. Front lens on 10 power is fixed.

I'm talking about adjusting parrallax on scopes that do not have the adjustable parrallax feature (AO).
The objective lens is the lens furthest from your eye. If you move this lens in or out, it will adjust parrallax. This is how you can adjust parrallax on scopes that do not have the adjustable parrallax feature built in. Its a a bit of a pain if you are constantly adjusting it (hence why people pay more for a scope with AO feature). For example I had an older bushnell (non adjustable parrallax model) that had parrallex factory set at 100 yards. From 100 yards and out, the focus and crosshairs were great. I mounted it on a rimfire and was shooting at 25 and 50 yards but it was blurry and the crosshairs could barely be seen. So I loosened the locking ring on the objective lens and gave the lens about a 1/2 to 3/4 turn until the parrallax was adjusted to about 40 yards. This allowed me to use the scope at 25 and 50 yards. Everything is now sharp at those ranges but now at 100 yards the targets and crosshairs are blurry and beyond 100 yards its unusable. But since I wanted this scope for 25 and 50 yards its perfect. I won't be constantly swapping the parrallax back and forth but if I need to , it takes about 5 minutes to set it back to 100 yards. Certainly not as convenient as a scope with the AO feature, but it works.

Here's an article on the subject:

You will aways get some apparent movement if you move you eye from the extreme center of the optics even at the prescribed distance. The lenses by design cannot be ground to be perfect for off angle viewing.

Update........just got out of the man (looky) shop with some fine results.
Made a little jiggy jiggy ( :D ) to take the outer ring off.
There is a spacer or O-ring guard behind the outer lock ring.
Fine pick got this out just swell.
Found a scopeless rifle and mounted the full of parallax scope on and clamped'er
in the vise.
Brought out the range finder and found a 98 yard tree.
Started to thread out the inner rings as the posted above site offered.
Bit at a time and the wobbly X hair tightened up.
Found a 48 yard target and the camper out front was 22 yards.
I unscrewed until the tree was all nice and steady.
Still some in the 48 yard target.
Got it all happy.
Still a bit at 22 yards.
Couple more adjustments and :D :D :D.......frick'in WHOOOOOT!
Swung the vice so the barrel was aiming at the far and beyond hillside
and not a wiggle to be.
Not sure where this one needs to go.
Maybe the Marlin for hundred yard fur?
Maybe the CZ for little fur?
Decisions decisions............ :D

Super7, if eye was allowed, your post deserves a trader rating.
Might be a bit shilly though........:p

I now have a scope that will work close and a bit furder..... :)
Now to take after the 3x9x40 on the rim that won't do 25 yards.

Thanks for the lesson yu'all.

Some of the Bushnells it is real easy to reset the parallax. I did it on one of mine. Will be easy to set it back if it ever needs use at 100 or 150 yards again. I set it up for 50 yards for a 22.
