I am thinking about buying a 1200 and trying to make a C3 clone out of it. I realize this is going to be a difficult and likely expensive task but can anyone tell me what I need?
What scope?
What bipod?
What bits and pieces?

Any suggested sources?

Thanks!

You see the stocks for sale from time to time. ZF69 scopes do turn up; some are ex-CF. Saw some sold from NZ of all places. The PH mounts are not a problem. The PH auxiliary iron sights can be had. PH bipod. The magazine unit may be the most difficult to simulate. Not too long ago, there was a rather serious clone offered for sale in the EE.
If you can find an older PH 7.62 target rifle with its iron sights, you've got a pretty good start.

300 pounds! Ouch! When I put together my version, I didn't try to find the correct bottom metal. That's more than I have in my whole project. C3 stock, PH bases and rings, a brand new S&L target barrel, 5E rear sight, PH front, have a PH bipod if I ever decide to use it with a bipod, PH action. Still haven't bought a ZF69 scope. IIRC, the closest PH to a C3 is the M82. These do turn up from time to time, usually for fairly reasonable prices.

what would it take to make a c3a1 clone? (sorry for digging up the past but atleast im using the search button)

PH 85 action.

When the C3A1s were built, they were just C3s upgraded with new stocks, barrels, scopes, mounts, actions ect, rather than a "whole new gun".

Welcome to Kanada.

C3A1 uses a McMillan A3 stock with a foreend rail cut for the PH bipod and Handstop,Barrels were McClenans sorry for the spelling.Scopes Unertl 10x mildots

thanx guys, from the research done since i asked. i've read (not saying its true) the c3a1 was built off m85's like lee enfield stated.
I also read that the m85 has a beefed up action and barrel over the m82.

Parker Hale M87 actions were used on c3a1 not M85

Ed

Ed is 100% correct on that, when they decided to upgrade the C3 they did infact change to the M87 action with the Unertl 10X.

That being said, the original C3 rifles did not have detachable magazines, it was not until they upgraded to the A1 that the magazine was added, that is when the scope was changed from the ZF69 to the Unertl and the wood stock was kept until it was replaced with the McMillan A2 stock in early 2000-2002. (see my avatar)

I just got the last item required to put togehter a C3 copy for a friend in the US.

I have a 1200C that has the C3A1 style detachable mag in .300 Win Mag, not the 4 rd mag. I don't know if it came that way or if the previous owner converted a C3 mag to work, but since my rifle has this mag I've wondered about using a 1200C as the basis for a pseudo C3 clone.

Does anyone know if the 1200C components (bottom metal) associated with the mag are the same as those used in the C3?

FYI Numrich has M86 receivers available dirt cheap for anyone looking for a more beefed up receiver to use for a clone. Only problem is that I heard that they won't ship receivers up north, even with an import permit. Can anyone confirm this? I certainly wouldn't mind getting one myself for a future build. This hobby is way too expensive and the only way I can afford to stay in the game is to try and pick up bits and pieces cheap and build a good rifle at reasonable cost.

What sort of scope base do they use? Does anyone have any decent close up pictures of the various things that make a C3 a C3?

The C3 rifles used Parker Hale 2 piece bases and rings for the Khales ZF69 scope. When the rifle was upgraded to the C3A1, a new all in one scope base/rings unit was manufactured and it also used a type of slotting similar to the M40A1. The top of the action was machined to accomdate this new base/rings with what appeard to be a lig system for the Unertl scope. I have yet to find anyone who can tell me the manufacture or that particluar base/rings combo, maybe one of the CGN military guys can weigh in on this one. I am thinking it was Parker Hale themselves, but I am not sure.

Bottom metal trigger guard /mag housing/ Front plate and screw from the PH 1200C is identical to the metal on a C3A1 because I have a set of each here for my rifle

I go back to work to work in July (on parental, going stir crazy). I'll harass the guys in the sniper cell for info but I doubt that they'll know much. Most of the snipers aren't that much into guns, believe it or not. I will try and get some good pictures of the scope base (markings?), and other unique parts of the rifle for those that are interested.

That answers one question, now all I need is to track down some mags, anyone know of a source, or even more details on manufacture? I can always make them if I need to I suppose. - dan

Those mags are the biggest piece of dog crap on the whole rifle. I changed mine over to AICS mags and they are worth every penny and then some. People badmouth the Parker-Hale rifles, but there is nothing wrong with them for their intended purpose. Do a mag conversion to the AICS and you really have something. I have yet to have a fail to feed, while the C3a1 mag at least every second mag I would have a fail to strip a round from the mag or a fail to feed, either one or the other guaranteed. If you need a C3a1 mag go look in the Hartland landfill in Victoria.
