Parker hale m82-m87-C3-C3A1 Rifles

I made up a C3ish rifle as a project. Used a new C3 stock, a PH action, and a new S&L target rifle barrel. Did not use the PH detachable magazine system because I always have considered it to be a second rate afterthought. Have a PH5E rear sight to fit the PH scope base. Used a clamp on front sight base instead of drilling and tapping for a PH front sight. Friend has a 69 scope, but I have yet to deal it from him. Interesting project, wasn't particularly expensive, shoots well enough.

The only problem we ever had with the mags was the springs being bent at the wrong angle - easy fix with some bending to get the floorplate from tipping.

I think it's a very good system myself - PH was way ahead of their times with rifle development - shame they went under before we saw more neat designs.

The C3 on the other hand was a nightmare to set up the scope bases on - levelling bars and grinding and shimming the base to get em aligned - sheesh!

I still love the rifles - Mauser's are still used for big game rifles. I've said it before, these could have been rebarreled in a magnum calibre if the CF wanted - they wanted some new toy to play with!

Wait for it though, I estimate that the Timberwolf will be gone within 10-15 years - due in part to grumbles I've heard from some current techs that I know. Wonder whats next on the horizon - AI perhaps? Makes you wonder why the British rejected the Timberwolf as their next rifle, and went with AI?

Cheers, Carl

I am thinking with in 8 yrs

Update:
I have now traded formost everything to clone the C3A1.
McMillan A2 stock with spacers
C3A1 trigger group
Parker Hale action and bolt
C3A1 clip
Montana Barrel with proper contour

I have a Kahles ZF95 but may look at trading for a Kahles ZF69 or up to a Unertl 10x if I can find either one. I will also be needing to find the complete Parker Hale spiggot assembly and base. Finding people to trade with will be the key to finnishing the rifle. Pension does not leave me to much room cash wise. But once started on a course we shall try and make the end result look as good as possible.
A great big thanks to fellow CGNr zthou for all his help and timely trade in this endeavor. Next step finding a scope.

Good work!

I know a source for the Unertl you need and I know a second source where you can get (and where I got) a brand new Parker Hale bipod and spigot and they have regular stock; max waiting time is like 10 days...

Man, you're close!

I thought McLennan did the barrels for the C3A1's?? I'm sure Carl can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong...

You have incoming.

Yes McLennan as far as I know did the barrels for the C3A1s. The nice thing about a few of the barrel maker's now they will do the contour needed and the proper twist. Here's hoping i get the rest of the items i need as quickly as i did these. [ all from one source ]

Rob McLennan did do the replacement barrels - but here's the wrinkle - as far as I can remember - no C3A1 has ever needed to be rebarreled.

The CFTO's have the procedure to set back the primary torque shoulder and the chamber end of barrel and then use the finish reamer to recut the chamber, until headspace is correct.

Also, there were enough spare barrels purchased by the LCMM that we could have kept going for a few years, even with aggresive use of the rifles.

Don't get me wrong, Rob makes outstanding barrels - I should know, I own one.

Nothing is simple with this rifle. By what you're descibing, you'll be using a PH 1200 or an M82 to makes a quasi C3/C3A1 hybrid. CGN mbr Savage has done what you're attempting to do, and his is a rather nice looking attempt.

Good luck in your quest - it'll be a neat project for you. Just remember to get the receiver face trued up and lap the lugs - you know, all the good stuff!

Cheers, Carl

The Unertl 10x you put me onto was sold just befor e thr New Year. Just was not taken off of the site yet.

Any one knowing the where abouts of a used 10x Unertl, MST100 U.S. Optics or a Kahles ZF69 for this project I can horsetrade for or even some cash if i sell something.

Got my Kahles scope from ebay. There are a bunch of ex Isralei sniper ones kicking around. I did get the offer of one here on Gunnutz when I posted a WTB ad. But understanably it was a lot of $.

I think the one I get from e-bay was just under $400

Call USO and put your name down and a deposit for one of the last batch being done right now.

Well, some lucky soul must've been laughing Christmas morning... Really sorry to hear that - maybe USO could help, like Steve says:

Hey, wouldn't those come considerably cheaper than the 3000$ one I directed delta1 to? Whichever it is, I'd wanna get my hands on one if I were making a C3A1...

The USO MST 100 by the time all exchanges and taxes are paid and duty looks like it may be in the $3500-$4000 range. Not cheap even by stretching my imagination. But we shall see if i can find a used one whether it be USO, Unertl or the 69 Kahles.

My God, that's how much my rifle alone costs... Something tells me that the used market is gonna be tough on this one, considering the limited run, be it USO or Unertl. Do what you can, but I already told you what I'd do... ;)

And imagine, our military is destroying these instead of putting them on the surplus market (as tps50701 and Steve David can attest to).

On the U.S.Optics site the ST-10 has the same looks as the MST-100 but the elevation and windage knobs are different.
Sooo. I decided to give ATR Rick a call and he believes the EREK knob system is an option on the ST-10. He is going to check to make sure. If that is the case I will get it as it is as close to the real thing as is possible. That will take a little time as they are off to a show now. On the good side it will give me time to part with a few items to pay for all this .
After getting the scope i will have everything but the P.H. pod it can wait a while. I shall have to recoup funds first and finish the build.

Not sure how you can find that they have the same looks apart from the knobs; I'd scout around some more before I jump the gun. Any pics of the other parts you've managed to assemble thus far?

In talking to Rick this is close. This will cost a little less than half of the MST-100 if both where in hand after tax's, duty, ect.

I will get some pictures of the parts to you to post as soon as they get here. They should arrive if the postal service does it's part on Wednesday. I can post them in an email addressed to you. Upload and download to a picture site then transfering to here would take me all day on this land line.send me your email address on the mail site here.
