Parker hale m82-m87-C3-C3A1 Rifles

As per my request, here are pics of delta1's build (he's got a slow connection, so I volunteered!):

And his caption: "Here are a few pictures of the project. If you can post them go ahead. I am on 26k here and it would take me forever to do it. On the lower left are the extra's I have. 1 is a hale trigger i is a Timney the rest are c3a1 parts."

Looks awesome - one thing though: your barrel's stainless - are you gonna apply an external coating to give it a matte look? And I take it these pics aren't from 8 years ago... ;)

Nice build delta1. Did you change the coulr of the barrel as it does look shinny. Have you managed to finish the build yet or still working on it. Mine is in the shop right now finally getting the barrel instaled. and then it will be done. Yours does look great.

The barrel was polished down with 400 grit makes it look shiney. As to what to do with the barrel for color not sure it will be blued, parkerized or coated with one of the coatings out there. Suggestions would help me out here.
The barrel is match chambered for 308 not 7.62 Nato, action trued and the lugs are lapped in. I still need to work with the stock. Just to relieve around the tang, trigger guard and the magazine guide before bedding them in.
The magazine guide will take some time to do, it has to be right to get it to feed with no hiccups.

No the pictures are not 8 years old, just age and new fangled gear. That camera has nearly as many buttons on it as this keyboard. Hence me not changing the date.
What are you doing on your barrel and action ( blued or something else) It just might help me make a decision on this girl here.

Very Nice build!

I think I may have your solution for the magazine issue. Not to rain on your parade, but I think you used the wrong 1200 action for your build.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is a standard 1200TX action is it not?

Short of actually using an M87 action, you should have actually used a 1200 Superclip action, as it has the stub on the action bottom for securing the magazine housing to - exactly the same as the M87. In addition, it also secures the front of the trigger housing - thats why you have to remove the mag catch to remove the screw.

PH used the superclip mag system, so they didn't have to re-invent the wheel again. Only thing really new is the mags which hold 6rds. The super clip actions usually came with the side bolt release button as well - same as the C3A1(not like the swing lever that you have).

Also, if you have feed issue's with the mags, play around with the mag spring, as this was the only real problem we ever had with the mags.

For the exterior finish, use KG Gunkote in matt black - it's a perfect finish to match the C3A1's finish! Oh, change the bolt knob too - we used the elongated tapered aluminum one PH did for the M85/M87.

Hope I helped you out a bit.

Other than that, again great effort! She looks great!

All the best, Carl

Thank you for the great information, You are right on the action. I now have the magazine and insert in the right place. I am thinking of bedding the insert to the stock. not to solid so i can remove it if need be.I will then bed the trigger guard assembly after final fitting. I have noticed if it is not exactly in the right place the clip will not lock in or feed.
Should i bed the receiver solidly around the edges of the tang or just skim bed under it?
What are the chances of finding a aluminum elongated PH bolt knob. If anyone knows where let me know. I have not seen one in all the parts searching I have done.

Carl,

Your knowledge of this rifle and all of its minutiae is nothing short of humbling... Look, how about you swap delta1's rifle for a real C3A1 for us at some CFB?? He'll have the real deal, and none will be the wiser; it's not like it'll give trouble for some soldier's target practice!

Not like it would matter - most soldiers will have never seen one of these, unless they are in a line regiment or go to CFSAC.

D1's problem is a little finacky due to the action. I have a friend who has a 1200 Superclip - I'll see if I can take some photos of what the action looks like. It should give his gunsmith something to go on for the placement of a stub.

Anything I can do to help a CGN'r out - as Barney would say!

Cheers, Carl

Hey Delta1:

Mine is done in the original C3A1 coating. Thanks to some friends. I do know that some people have duracoated them.

Hey Carl I had to change out my Santa barbra action to a 1200 clip action as the threads on my santa barbra action were to big to accetp my barrel. But it is still suposed to be don at the end of the month.

Carl
Those pictures would be appreciated. Since everything here has been trued, I will work with it.

Bos:
What was the original C3A1 coating.

Regards Delta1

The original coating that was used, goes by the trademark of: Suncorite

I don't know if the company is still in business or not. It was horribly expensive stuff and a nightmare to apply. I used to have a small tin of the stuff - got it off of a REME tech I know in UK.

Like I said previous to this, use KG Gunkote in matt black(actually more like a semi-gloss). This stuff is an identical match to the Suncorite and it is readily available and in use by some Gunsmiths in Canada.

Casey at Tactical Ordnance - Arwen Ace CGN ID here - uses it to refinish his builds as well.

Sheesh, I seem to be being used an aweful lot lately for my knowledge. Everybody wants a C3/C3A1 now - I've created a monster:eek::D!

Cheers. Carl

Carl:
Thank you. I look at it this way if it was not for those that know the rest of us wouldn't.
My reason for doing the project was I could not find one to buy at a price that could be afforded even if found. Also the way things are going now the ones the DND has are liable to be junked instead of sold off. And the best reason of all I'm a Gun Nut and the C3/C3A1 are great looking rifles.
All the pointers I get from all you folks pleases me and helps this project along.
Regards Delta1

Limelight getting too hot for ya? ;) I know you're loving every bit of this, you can't fool me!

If anything, I sincerely hope you motivate someone to come up with the exact parts (Unertl included :stirthepot2:) like you did for your M40A3 build.

If I can find an Unertl at a reasonable price I would go that way.So if someone has one they may want to part with speak up. To get into one at $3000.00 for something used(and how used up) though is way out of my league. Maybe happen if I sold my antique Hepburn rifle, but like the C3A1 there are not many of them around either.

I can hear what your saying I was thinking that mine was going to get either a bushnell 6500 or mayby a leopold Mark 4 tacticle.

Even though I would love to put a Unertl scope it is not going to be ing my budget anytime soon.

A good option in my opinion would be a falcon 10X. Good looking scope, would fit the look of the C3 nicely and it is good optics for the $$$.

If you want to spnd more, go for a US Optics ST-10 with the USMC knobs as an option, you will still be cheaper then a Leupold 10X.

I am sure Carl would concur.

If I cannot find an Unertl 10x at a decent price(not knowing what that really is) the ST-10 is my next go to.It will run $16-$17 hundred in hand I am told. I will not know for sure untill the Shot Show is over and everyone is back at work. Looks to be 60-90 days from order to receipt. Gives me time to part with a few things I never had intentions of parting with.
This build has me thinking, if I do this I can do that only problem I have is running out of, I do this's.
