Parker Hale Rifles

RR,
They were made in LaCoruna, one of the locations of the Empresa Nacional Santa Barbara de Industrias Militares S.A.. Santa Barbara was the the nickname given to these actions.
Both what we call "Santa Barbara Mausers" and the PH Safari are copies of the FN Supreme Mauser and are, except for the triggers, identical.

P-H started using the SB actions somewhere in 1965. Prior to that (so, from about 1962 to 1965), it was FN actions. They were made in barrel lengths of 22 inches barrel (OAL 43 inches), 24 inches barrel (OAL 44.5 inches) 25 inches (OAL 26 inches Magnums) and 26 inches barrels (Target rifles). Early 1200 Safari Super Magnums had 22 inches barrels. The model with the angled fore end nose cap was the 1200 (Safari).

The PH Midland my buddy had was a POS as it continually jammed.I think that was their cheaper model.............Harold

Actually, they bought a big bunch a spare US 1903 bolts wich they fitted to some kind of 1893 actions. They were quoted as "Hybrid Actions"....

I was going to buy a PH to pop my firearm virginity..but I read some comments about the rifle jamming and issues with loading.

Should I be real concerned?

Neat analogy

Well....it'll be a matter of "standards"!
Had I "popped" with a supermodel, I may have been more choosy since...It's much easier to go from a cheap 'surp to a Parker Hale then, back again!

I'd say it depends on wich model you want to go after and what you want to do with it... if based on a M/98 variant, as a hunting rfile, then, it's very hard to go wrong. If you stay with the 1000, 1100, 1200 or the "80" series, you can't go too wrong...
A Mauser action is hard to have it jammed... if it was not fooled with by Bubba...
Just keep in mind that Parker Hale sold a lot of rifles based on ex-military actions too (made by BSA).

Agree with Baribal on this and many still hold the P-H-Mauser 98 Canadian C3 and newer sniper rifle version in high regards. Have recently bought a 1200SC and will use it as basis of semi-clone" sniper rifle to used in competition. Unfortunate to take apart such a nice .308 to only use action!

Peter,
If you can't put yourself at doing this, you can get a Husqvarna 640 series and swap the bolt shroud to the "Supreme" type. They have some beaters at TEC wich will gladly offer themselve to become a nice target rifle. I have a M/98 Target with a S&L bull barrel and it still can show newer stuff how to shoot.

Actually, there is a 20rd. Magazine (trench mag??) for the '98...replaced the flooplate, spring n' follower. I think one passed though the EE about a year ago...WWI technology.

w w w.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Search.aspx?filter=50230

My bathroom reader shows it priced at 79.95 (dated 1999?, #22 Numrich) and, now has a price of 53.00

Peter,
Actually, yes there are several manufacturers who made over the years clip type chargers. I personally prefer the swing floorplate type. You can find aftermarket kits wich provide a charger and sometimes a new trigger guard assembly. Again, my personal choice for a target / varmint rifle is the standard M98 trigger guard / floorplate, with a little bent for the late commercial FN M98 (elongated latch). I think that TEC had some in the past and maybe BOP have it too.

y2K,
Are you taliking of the bases? They usually use the same base as the FN Mauser type. Medium rings usually fit quite OK. Older P-H have a large bolt knob with short bolt arm wich sometimes comes very close to the scope bell. Here are some
- Tasco one piece World Class - WC1916 / The rings I have (steel) are WC1873
- Weaver two piece # 46 front / # 45 rear
- Leupold 1 piece - # 49988
- Leupold Two Pieces - # 50025 front and # 50026 rear
- Burris 1 piece # 410215
- Burris 2 pieces # 410296

I purchased this magazine at a show in Lanark this weekend. Actually "found" it via fellow cgn'er who is a friend of the vendor.

Had been looking for about a year...I also found an outfit in the UK that has PH mags (fresh from factory) and, was debating bringing in a few...hoping to sell a couple to subsidize m' own.

I have a Ljungman that was without a magazine for years...single feeding it is a very easy way to lose a finger. The PH was more forgiving that way but, still not practical for use. 2011 is my "year of magazine aquisition"
