I have shotgun 14 inch Parkerised 870 shotgun . It was left in a gun case for a long time . There is surface rust on the whole gun now . Is there a coating I can put on the gun to rid it of the surface rust ? Any idea at the cost to re coat a Parkerised gun with surface rust ?

If it’s just surface rust 0000 steel wool and gun oil will take it off, if it’s more than surface rust you might be looking at a refinish. I can’t comment on price as I’ve n get had to refinish a gun.

I’ve been testing my new production 870 express as I keep hearing how easy they rust, I’ve been purposely going out in the rain with it. I’ve quickly wiped it down in the truck and left it uncased over night to air dry, quick oil the next day and back it goes in the case it’s been living in since I bought it this last winter. Not one speck of rust has showed up, I’m not convinced th finish is that terrible. People must be putting them way soaking wet in a bag or something.
I carried an 870 express on a two hour hike in late summer. Most of the way in one hand, gripped around the receiver. I did not wipe it down that night... The very next morning I had a wonderful hand shaped area of surface rust. I think the finish on a utility shotgun should be more robust then that. It scratched way too easily too. I think I'll stick with blued guns, they look much better anyways lol
No parkerized finish is rust proof, just better at holding oil and more resistant to rust than a blueing. You need to season parkerized guns kinda like a frying pan. Soak them in oil and never use degreaser.
If the OP 14” barrel was bought in the last few years it is blued and not parkerized, even if some stores are advertising as such....

Definitely not my experience so far and I have oily sweaty hands, I’ve experienced exactly what you describe on my grizzly and Fabarm. Both are parkerized and one is cheaply priced the other more expensive, my 870 express has not shown any rust from hand prints to full on rain or hiking through wet brush. Believe me when I say I’ve been trying to get it to rust but it’s been great so far, I bought it in nov of 2017.
Does not everybody know that you can't put away a gun after a day of wet, takes along time to get the moisture out of the steal and wood or plastic, not definetly over night, lucky if you can try it out in day's with humidity factors and forget a friggin gun case, Just my thought's, let it dry on it's own. I have seen perfect gun's that they thought were dry, a month later you might as well drop them in salt water for a day. Gun case's I do not own in over 60 yrs. But then again I don't have any that were built in the last 40 yrs. gun's that is.

Agreed, I’m not in a particularly dry part of the Okanagan though. Not wet like the coast but not dry like Kamloops, I’ve been more lax with this gun just to see if it will show any rust bloom. I’m not complaining but it’s been great so far, last couple times I was hiking around it got soaked.
I have an 870, it has a peebly, dull finish, not sure if its parkerized but definitely not a blued finish. It developed a brownish/purlpish rust haze, none of the conventional blued rifles were impacted. So the finish is definitely less resistant to rust. Just my experience.

Flitz makes a polish that leaves a very slight residue to prevent tarnishing and rust, it will remove surface rust but it will also slightly smooth the surface. I've never had a gun treated with Flitz rust - and I live in the rain forest.
