I'm just a little curious, what parts would you swap out on a new M305 when you get it... I'm really considering on buy one and from some previous threads i'v been reading, there has been a lot of part swaps to improve the gun in many ways.....but what are the basic ones you would change right away just for functionality purposes, i just want an idea what the end cost will be for the gun and the parts(not to break the bank in parts) and i do realize tuning is a factor.

most will replace the op rod spring guide and most of the time the op rod spring itself too. Because the factory spring guide is a flat piece of steel and can bind up and be rough in function which could lead to poor groups could. So most will get a sadlak or m14doctor op rod spring guide which is a smooth cylinder shape and allows for smoother function, but usually the chinese springs are too tight, so a USGI or Tubb spring is needed.

some will also swap out the stock right off the bat too, but ya when you get it, do a real good tear down make sure all looks good and safe to shoot, then shoot it a bunch and see how you like it and then go from there.

The sights. Front and rear. It's a lord have mercy hallelujah miracle to get a Norc with decent sights.

Op rod spring guide and maybe usgi rear sights , that's if your rear Norc sights are crap , some are not,,hand load for it and learn to shoot it and it should bgtg

As you go along learn from the stickies and the forums about other tweaks, but most will shoot around 2 Mao with good straight hand loads

If you want better than that,,welcome to the addiction,,,lol

Oprod spring and guide, rear sight and some trigger parts such as hammer, safety and trigger assy.
Trigger group parts are swappable with garand parts[safety, trigger assy, hammer, hammer spring, hammer springhousing, hammer spring plunger]

I'll tell you what I do and bear in mind I'm in no way saying "you should do what I do". Maybe I follow the path I do out of habit I dunno

1) If the rifle came in a chinese plastic stock I make two adjustments right out of the box
First is setting the ferule on the stock nose back so it has a visible gap. Many a poor grouping norinco have been sent to me that shot far better after just that simple adjustment.
And second, I loosen the stock liner screws, lock the rifle into the stock with the trigger group and then retighten them.

Next, I get rid of the chinese sights and flash hider altogether. Correctly machined ones are affordable and are built to go to war with , in other words, reliable as all hell LOL

And then I'll replace the spring guide rod with a non stainless version. Insert your favorite brand here. There is no M14doctor parts out there anymore... I never made any parts...I built rifes and made composite stocks. My former associate Magwedge/m14medic can probably help ya tho ;)
I like S&J hardware's spring/guide rod combo. I see no reason to buy a sadlak when so many quality options for NM oprod spring guide rods are made right here in Canada.

The it's a few good mags and find some ammo she likes.

Thomas, this is something I have not read about before. What do you see happening when you do this?

I have seen loads of the chinese plastic stocked rifles that it's really difficult to even seat the barrelled action without some wranglin. So what I started doing was loosening the stock screws enough that the receiver could easily seat, then locking in the trigger to samwich it all. Then tighten up the stock liner screws. This drastically improved overall stock fit. This is not a performance or accuracy mod or process, just simply an adjustment for better stock fit and pretty much only applies to the chinese plastic stock.
The liners have tonnes of wiggle room in the stock, have a close look some time at how gappy the plastic is around the liners.

I had this very experience: I could not get the barrelled action to fit into the stock of an M305 I purchased off the EE. The trigger group would not fit all the way into the receiver when mounted to the stock. There would be a 2 to 3 mm gap between the trigger group wings and the underside of the stock.

After much struggling, I removed the stock liner screws to allow the liner to shift about, fitted everything together then tightened up the screws. Everything fits fine now.

Do any of the site sponsors carry a good selection of m14 sights? The rear sight on my 305 has the hole drilled too low so that needs to go, looks silly with the rear sight cranked way up just for 100yd zero...

I also wonder about this since I got mine recently. Do you guys see an actual improvement by changing the spring guide or is it overrated?
And whats wrong with the sights, I think mine are fine? I wish the front one was skinnier tought.

The scout hand guard is 200+$ , While very nice it costs as much or more than a new wooden usgi stock does, I think the $ could be spent better and that its a frivolous thing to purchase definitely not a must have.

How is this accomplished? Pry off the metal ferule and file the plastic? Any visual resource out there on how to do this?

Thanks,
-DF
