PDW builds - Lets see them, and share results

You have to ask NEA about that. It is no longer in our hands. I don't even have the original test unit as it is at NEA for prototyping. I miss my PDW stock and have to resort to using a standard carbine stock to shoot my PDW uppers. :(

I have been asked to develop a new PDW specific can so I spent the weekend building that.

Can I have one?

Please please please?

I'm thinking on switching the MOE grip for a MOE-K, it would fit nicely I think... other than that it is almost perfect as is.

I know :p but after seeing pics of a 14.5" in here I figured I was not so bad.
That thing has a little bit of you in it btw :)
Frankly the only thing I'd change is the barrel weight I think; it's one of Questar's match 11.5"... I would have preferred a DD lightweight 11.5" but that was not an option...

I never thought I'd hear the day when someone said a 11.5" barrel was too long. lol. Give that most PDW's are 8"-10" barrel length, it's not hard to understand why, I guess.

Where'd you buy your AAC flash hider? I want one but I'm having a hard time locating a vendor here in Kanada.

You definitely get props for the Magpul accessories. :D And I really like the AAC Blackout on it. I actually think the 11.5" match was a good choice (it's basically 12.5" with the flash hider anyway).

I'd like one too, but I want the can that goes with it....

Troy, for the most part people are shooting the same ammo they'd shoot through a regular carbine or rifle to keep the logistics as simple as possible. Generally speaking, most civilian users are not all that concerned with the military use and requirements of the PDW, so as long as the round is functional and reasonably accurate, then that's what most of us would care about. Afterall, these are just range toys for the majority of us. Punching paper is our priority - not killing someone.

If you placed genuine importance on the purpose a PDW as a military weapon then I guess you could justify a specific round specially tailored for a PDW's unique performance criteria. You'd have to have the time, energy, and effort to use faster burning powders and possibly different bullets within the design parameters of a pistol based gas system. That's a lot of work for most of us. Not something I would want to HAVE to do.

I guess it all depends on your perspective. For my purposes, one common round between platforms is far more desireable than worrying about something that ultimately doesn't matter (at to least my way of thinking).

I just would have thought by now, since there are so many of these short bbl'd guns out there that perfecting a perfect load with faster burning powder instead of accepting the massive flash would be something you guys would be trying to find.

Peter, I appreciate your insightful reply.

While i had mine, though I had a 10.5" bbl, I spend the time at the range, worked up a load, shot it indoors and watched for flash as well as down range accuracy. I wanted to know that my rounds were as close together with double taps as possible and with a Smith Ent. brake, it worked amazingly well. When I sold my gun, it went with about 700 rounds of nothing but the best. I can appreciate buying ammo bulk. I do the same for my handguns and it's worked out quite well but I never battled with fire breathing dragons either with the handgun ammo except for Blazer ammo; though dirty as he!!, there was plenty of flame to go around.

I meant no disrespect Troy. My point is that if it's a blaster, give it blaster ammo...;)

If we were referring to a short barrelled bolt action or any other firearm where accuracy was a concern, I'd definitly play around with some faster buring powders to make the load as consistent as possible.

With a PDW, accuracy is not my primary concern, 100% reliability and function is. That's what I'm looking for in my choice of ammo. If it just happens to be very accurate, then all the better. Under the circumstances 3MOA @ 100 yds. from a PDW would more than satisfy me.

I have to agree. Also, with an SBR/PDW, you need to have standard loads unless you want to start playing around with gas hole sizes in the bbl (usually a bad idea). under-powered ammo or ammo with too fast a powder will make the rifle short-stroke and be stressful on the bolt (fast powders with enough "oomph" to cycle reliably)

I find my shorty cycles well with factory Win 55gr, but it ejects quite "vigorously" and has started leaving quite a bit of brass on the case deflector.

Has anyone ever figured out which commercial load best replicates SS109? I'd like to give my shorty a go with something akin to NATO standard, just to see the difference.
