PDW builds - Lets see them, and share results

yeah us albertans are usually armed to the teeth and have enough ammo to hold off the canadian army for a few days lol

Many of us WERE the Canadian Army...

I really like some of the builds on here, but only a few really classify as PDW's while many may qualify as Special Forces/CPD/Contractor/MOUT set-ups.

Or you can just shoot through the tube...

It seems to me if you try to shoot through the tube with lower 1/3 co-witness (which is what you get with the DD rear sight) you may end up placing your shots way high, especially if you center the front sight in the tube.

I'll try it the next time I'm out.

Sit back and relax, THIS is how a PDW is done. ;)

Best thing is, this one is in 300 Whisper so there is no loss of ballistic efficiency because it can still push a 200gr bullet to 1000 fps even with the 7.5" barrel.

If 9mm is more your flavour then this little beast is the way to go.

Would a SUB 2000 qualify? I personally think they would, since PDWs are more intended for carrying/backup and less for shooting.

What do you think?

Gentlemen:

For the most part I very much like what I see.

I would just like to make a few points to keep us on track

There are some very nice rigs out there, with a lot of thought, time and resources put into the configurations. So that we can all learn, PLEASE post specs to go with your pics.

There have been some comments, and made rightly so. While not wanting to offend anyone PDW are small and compact, lets keep the max length to 10.5" (which really is a bit long),

Lastly, please post pics/video, explanations, observations and thoughts on the preformance of your PDW carbines. Part of the reason I have included 10.5" carbines is that I would like to compare their preformace to 7.5 & 8.5" barrels. This could include (with in board rules) things like accuracy, function, penetration tests. When reporting please Include specs on your caliber and amo.

Well gents thank you so much for your participation, and I look forward to the rest of this thread.

Regards and all the best

AbH

Overall I really like the performance of my PDW, and that was probably the main motivation behind selling my 10.5" LMT. It's lighter, easier to handle and with the PWS CQB generates minimal recoil (I'm hoping to eliminate that completely this year with the Enidine buffer, which replaces a Spikes ST-T2). One thing that did really stick out in my mind is that the 7" PDW was running a lot cleaner than the carbine (both DI), which sure makes maintenance a lot less of a chore. Not entirely sure why - but I'm certainly not complaining.

Things I particularly like... The PWS CQB was a CGN recommendation which I went with over the original FSC 556 knockoff (haven't looked back since). The BAD A.S.S. safety has to be one of the nicest and smoothest functioning setups out there and the 2-stage KAC trigger is really a treat. Troy BUIS - need we say more? The latest addition is a LaRue RISR which I haven't had a chance try out beyond my basement, but it's very slick and operates exactly as advertised.

Nice stuff there Suputin, what is the overall length of both rifles collapsed?

Thank you. Not sure on the OAL of the 9mm. The 300 Whisper is roughly 21-22 inches OAL collapsed. If is fricken puny in the hands. The ergo's aren't stellar but for the over all size they are actually pretty good. I was easily able to put rounds onto a 100 yd target.

With the sound suppressor, you can actually hear the bullet go through the paper which is very cool.

As to penetration, have you ever seen the size of a 200gr .30 cal bullet? It is longer than the Whisper case and with its slow velocity, that huge bullet has a metric ton of penetration. I would have no doubt that short of hitting bone it would go through a deer end to end no problem.

It seems like a good fit for such a short barrel (300 whisper that is). Sort of like a lower-power 9x39 type round. speaking of which i'd loooove to build a 9x39 vz 58 with a short barrel as a pdw, The 9A91 and As Val are two of my fav guns.

I lusted after a 9x39 for a long time but I couldn't figure out a decent source for bullets or a barrel so I ended up going with the Whisper which as it turns out is very easy to live with.

I don't think the Whisper is "underpowered". I have done a lot of work with subsonic .30 cals and they have an impressive amount of power available terminally. Because of their low velocity they tend to penetrate to a HUGE degree. We tested an RCMP issue level 2A kevlar vest and a subsonic .30 cal bullet will easily blow through both sides of the vest or a total of 42 layers of kevlar. And it can do that with almost no noise which is an amazing thing to experience first hand.

I have shot a subsonic 30 cal to 200 yds no problem. Beyond that they can be a bit iffy but I don't seriously think the 9mm would be all that much better. Drop and windage become major factors with any subsonic.

The nice thing about the Whisper is that is truly multipurpose as it can easily launch 125gr bullets at 7.62x39 velocities. the best thing is it can do all this through the ubiquitous AR platform without the need for modifications to the rifle save the .30 cal barrel.

For a PDW I think the 300 Whisper is nearly the perfect round. The 556 loses too much velocity and terminal performance to be truly great in a PDW.
