I am thinking of making a more compact and simple gun out of a M4. Would have iron sights or a small red dot.

What are the issues involved in cutting the barrel back to within an inch of the handguards?

Does this effect port pressures? If so, in what way and how much?

Since the rifle is already restricted, is there a legal issue?

The barrel is already under 18" It is 14.5". can I cut it down to 10.5"?

Are you suggesting I can buy a 10.5" barrel,.but can't make one out of a 14.5?

Please advise on the port pressure issues, if any.

I guess you must've missed the part about anything reduced to under 18" being prohibited... Yes, you can buy a 10.5" barrel - but if you make one out of a 14.5", you'll go directly to jail without passing go. Someone else more knowledgeable can probably comment on your other question.

No cutting period, since you're not considered a manufacturer, any cutting would result in a prohibited weapon. This retarded piece of legislation probably results from the politicians hearing the phrase "cut-off shotgun" one too many times.

Send it to a gunsmith and they'll be "re-manufacture" it to a shorter length. Or just buy a new barrel.

This is what I had in mind.

Now, if someone could comment on port pressures and gas issues. Am I changing anything by installing a shorter barrel? Port place and size would be unchanged.

cutting down the barrel affects how long the gas tube needs to be, and where it is tapped... if you just cut the barrel there is not enough dwell time to reliably cycle the action if you use a carbine length gas system on a PDW length barrel

most shorter barreled AR's need the pistol length gas system, i think 11.5 is the shortest barrel you could run with a carbine gas system, but even that may be pushing it

hmm... I wonder if this is related to the threads where people have difficulty getting 10.5" Norc ARs to cycle using ammo that works fine in their 14.5" Norcs

Barrel length has no effect on port pressure. How could it? All other things being equal, as the bullet passes the gas port it has no way of knowing how much more barrel is ahead of it. Gas port pressure is related to the distance the port is from the chamber. The only effect barrel length has on the gas system is the dwell time of the pressure curve.

If you cut a barrel down to a shorter lenght and tread it for a flashider, how would anyone know you didn't buy it that way.
