PDW optic suggestions?

I think the Aimpoint has a larger FOV, but I'm not 100%.

9 MOA is okay for sub-50 meters, but too granular for 100m plus in my book. I'd lean towards a 3.25 MOA myself...

The EoTech MRDS is a 3.5 MOA. And they're tough as fvck...

I really like the look of the Meprolight MOR for a higher end dot - it has dual redundant circuits and power supplies and integrated visible and IR lasers, quite a good deal too - much cheaper than a good dot and a PEQ.

I think I'm going to go with an aimpoint for now, tactical products is local to me and has both the t1 and t2 in stock listed on their site. I'm going to pop in and see if I can choose between the 2, I'm not sure if I like the flip up caps on the t2.

I recently put together a 7.5" PDW AR and was debating what optic to use on it.

As I already had a spare EoTech sitting in the safe, I decided to try it out to see what I thought of it. I found the optic just a bit too large sitting on top of such a compact, short AR.

I used a lower from another AR which had a LMT Sopmod stock on it as I was waiting for a Rainier billet lower I purchased on the EE to arrive. Although I like this lower on my 12.5" AR, I also found the stock a bit bulky.

Here is a photo of the first setup:

The Rainier came with a CTR stock which suited the short upper much better. I broke down and purchased an Aimpoint H1 and mounted it. This package is now one sweet PDW to handle and shoot. Light, compact and maneuverable.

IMHO an Aimpoint Micro is the best optic to use on a PDW. Here is what it ended up becoming:

Hope this helps.

Don't discount the Holosun in it's various models. I have them on shotguns, 5.56mm rifles and 9mm carbines. I also have an Aimpont T1 which I have mounted on its parent Steyr TMP and for the past year a DD Mk 18 carbine. For casual range work, the Holosun has the Aimpoint beat for affordable quality. The Holosuns in all of their various iterations, run very well. The nicest version thus far (IMO) is the solar-powered dot with battery back-up. It is constant-on with an ambient light source and "shake-awake" under battery power with an 8-hour Auto Shut-down. Battery life for a single battery is (supposedly) rated at 50,000 hours, but is active only when the sight is left on (for eight hours at a time) in a dark environment. In other words, the battery is good for many years if all of the Holosun and Duracell hype is to be believed. So far, so good in my world.

I have the PARALOW HS403A RDS on my NEA PDW and it is every bit (so far) the equal of my Aimpoint T1. Personally, I would recommend the Paralow HS 403C Solar Power RDS for its near-indefinite life-span per battery. That, or the new HS503C with it's battery-powered EoTech style "dot in circle" reticle. Battery power is not much of an issue with 50,000 hour life-span and eight-hour auto shut-down with "shake-awake" feature on every model of sight....

Just my $.02, but for my money if the sight is just for fun at home on the range (which mine all are now), the Holosun Paralow rigs are the way to go. They even have integrated lasers with certain models if that turns your crank for use with/without NVGs...

Best Regards & Fun Shooting!

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys, I just got back from the store and ended up choosing the T2. I got a pretty good price on it I think as it was on sale, best I could find online was $880 + tax/shipping, I paid 859.95 + tax and at the cash they gave me a free Aimpoint hat. So not too bad I was able to handle both the T1 and T2 in their store, got the cheapest price I could find, saved on shipping, and got a free hat!

They had some mounts and risers in stock also but I wanted something a little more fancy. So I held off on the mounts/risers for now

If you're looking to splurge, go with an RMR. While I've never held an unmounted EO, I'm betting it weighs in the 1/2lb to 1lb ballpark if it's anything like my Meprolight. Too heavy and too bulky for a PDW build. Imagine trying to put on the same stunting moves after gaining 100lbs ;) Again, if looking to splurge, something from Aimpoint would be a distant 2nd choice, but RMR is a lot FASTER. I am running a Deltapoint on my 22lr AR build for speed. It's an option but I figured you'd wanna go with something sturdier if you're doing a tacticool "PDW" build.

My rmr that I have in my pistol came with a picatiny rail adapter so I can try it in the rifle one day. For now I really wanted to try something new, so I went with the aimpoint. Even though I don't have it in a rifle I already have a rmr.

And I like being able to handle what I'm buying if possible. I don't know anywhere local that stocks RMR's? I'm happy with the one I have but it would be great to see other models and reticle sizes/shapes. If there was a store I could walk into to see them I doubt I'd be able to walk out without one

In general, if you want something fast on a rifle, you can get away with a 3-4MOA plain dot, no problem. That's what top IPSC MR guys like to run (generally C-More). RMR is the right form factor and pretty small and light, which is the goal for something that would realistically be carried in a vehicle (assuming they don't just decide to run irons). I know our shooting scene is waaaaaaaay different from reality, but.... As it was mentioned, can't really go wrong with Aimpoint unless you're doing a DMR build :)

A T-1 in 4MOA will suit you fine. I have used them without magnification to make good hits at 500m on 10.3" & 12.5" bbls. If you don't need it for actual gun fighting, you can also get away with the H-1 and save yourself a few bucks.

-S.

I went with the T2 over the T1 because at the store handling both the flip up caps didn't bother me and can be removed if I don't want to run them. Also the T2 has a clearer window due to a new front lense. And side by side it didn't feel really any bigger or heavier then the T1. That store didn't carry the H1 so I didn't get to compare it

Anyways it's the newer model but basically the same as T1 with some small added features

Any suggestions for where to buy another RMR?
