I've been considering getting a peep sight for my TC Hawken for awhile and I think I'm just about ready to buy one. I was more or less sold on the Lyman 57 since it would be the easiest to install, but mounted on the tang I'm wondering if it gets in the way of pulling back the hammer in a hurry? Anyone with any experience care to comment?

The other option would be to get the barrel drilled and tapped to take a Williams, or other, receiver site. If I were to go this route I'm wondering if I would have enough clearance to mount it beside the hammer or would I have to go further forward?

Any input would be welcome, thanks/

TC peeps are great, but hard to find now. I would like to find a couple myself.

.Diopter type peep sights must be close to your eye in order to work (tang mount or in that vicinity). If you were to mount something further up on the barrel a ghost ring set up would be the best you could hope for. And yes, a tang sight will get in the way in a hurry.

The TC doesn't get in the way at all. I use them on all my Hawken rifles.

What worked really well for me was an old Lyman tang sight. The ones off old Winchester rifles are too tall, but if you can find one for a 99 Savage, they work great. Buffalo Arms sells a brand new Marbles tang sight to fit a Savage, for $129, should work a treat. These sights flip down out of the way when not in use, for example, when the light gets too low, you can flip it down and use your open rear sight. Not in the way at all!

I just checked the link. They show the sight at $139.12 without mounting screws. Add on 27% exchange right now , plus shipping, and it gets pretty darn expensive. But I guess them's the brakes .

True, but I can spend that on a nice bottle of single malt scotch, and it will be gone in the morning. The sight will be yours forever....:D

here's one we made for the hawken, a Williams peep on a block, not really fancy but very functional, 3" groups at 100 yrds. And doesn't interfere with the grip.Very sturdy also.

Realy nice!, I had thought about trying to make something like that at work, but as far as I know we lack the capability to machine dovetails. Possibly I could use a triangle file but It would be a lot of work.

Just out of curiosity what Williams sight is that?

Seems to me I remember being told that the old timers would mill a rectangular slot, then take an appropriately ground chisel, lay it in the slot, then smack said chisel smartly with a hammer. Reverse the barrel, and repeat. If you have the chisel ground just right, and the slot milled correctly, and smack the chisel just right, with the proper sized hammer, voila! Dovetail. If it is a bit too tight, smack again, or touch up with a file. If it is too big, the metal wasn't removed by the chisel, just moved around. Use the hammer to readjust, or, failing that, fling the thing into the bush, and try again. Might be good to try on a piece of scrap first....
OTOH, this may be an old wives' tail. I tend to misremember the odd thing... Can anyone else confirm or deny?

Go to the lyman web sight they sell the peep sight. I have 1 on my lyman 54 GPRH. This sight allows me to hit a 10 inch gong at 100 meters off hand.
