perfect or best wolf-coyote rig

I use a Savage 22-250 with 55gr VMAX rounds for coyotes. Really flat shooting rifle. Better have a clear sight picture though. Hitting a blade a grass is enough to throw the bullet off. Bought it strictly for coyote hunting.

I was using a .243 but when the P.O.S. thing would actually hit where you are aiming, it was a punisher on hide recovery!
I now use a 22-250 and have not looked back.
.243 was a Winchester model 70 that should have been used as a pry bar, rather than a useful weapon. Lots of time and money spent on bedding, mounts glass etc, still junk
22-250 is a browning lever action that is so smoothe and accurate, I bought its bigger brother in .308 and love it as well.

I am using a Cooper 260 rem, with a Zeiss HD5 3-15x42. The high B.C. .264" bullets do great in the wind.

what grain are you using for this?
also, uh how do the dogs look afterwards?

I bought a .260 for this purpose, but took too long and was unable to get out with it over the winter.

If you don't want to save the hides, 130gr Accubonds make a mess. If you want to save the hides, the 142gr Matchking still kills them fairly well, but it doesn't blow them up nearly as bad.

I had very good luck with 87gr V-Max in my Savage .243 last winter and it was surprisingly easy on the fur. Only one exit wound out of 9 coyotes and that was because I hit it low from above so the bullet only had a little ways to go to the off side. Big hole there! All the rest were high chest shots behind the shoulder and no exit wounds on any of them. The 87gr Bergers were a completely different story, total destruction of the 5 coyotes I shot with them. One even literally blown in half from a shoulder shot.

You should just buy a basic Savage Axis rifle. I'm pretty sure you can get them in .223 and .270. They cost about $350 new.

You can order a LH montana Rifle Co from Clay. I really like a 25-06 for your stated purpose. It has the long action and 26" tube. You can get a short action and 22" in The 257Roberts 260 or 243/6mm There is something about the Bob that turns me on even though I know the 260 has better selection of bullets. Those would be my choices or possibly the 6.5x284. That is also in their short action which I think is the correct action length for shooting hunting bullets.
