Petawawa Gun Club Presents.. The Sharpshooter Competition

Considering what I thought the intent to be I think $20 was a fair price. I was under the impression a big part raison d'etre for this shoot was to attract new shooters to precision shooting. You probably won't attract much new blood if someone's sporting a Remington 700 is competing against people with $5000-$10'000 rifles and there's a crazy steep entry fee.

It's probably a pipe dream and ammo is now at a premium but maybe next year we could look into the local units donating some 5.56 ball and see if we can bring some C7s, C8s and light machineguns out to let people try out on full-auto. We might get some bites if we set something up where we charged a couple bucks to shoot them and the proceeds went to whatever charity. Maybe see if snipers could come out and do a famil shoot or display.

That should be doable. I've seen civilians on ranges for famil before. I'd come out to get some extra trigger time on a C7. Lol

Finally made time to put up a few pics.

My rig....Savage 10 FCP-K in .223 topped with a Bushnell 6500. I was using handloads...69g bullets.

Grouchy old guy next to me that kept giving me a hard time ;-)

Match organizer grinning ear to ear on the practice day.

The "Mystery Target". Die bugs die.

My target after putting 36 rounds into it...6 at each distance 100-200-300-400-500-600. Not bad considering this was only my third time shooting this distance and my first rifle "match" since I was a kid. I missed called the wind my 1 MOA at 400-500-600. Darn!!

Sample of some of the AWESOME prizes ! Thanks sponsors!

And finally...crappy video of the 400 yard 12" plates match. Soooooo much fun!!!!

So grateful for my shooting buddy rhs for inviting me as a guest and for my fellow shooters for putting up with my endless questions and hysterical giggles as my rounds hit where I was aiming.

I think I am hooked!

Crazy steep fee would scare people away. It isn't acceptable for all of the man hours that J and S put in to set this up and there was a recorded loss. They should have been sitting at $0.00 by the end of it or perhaps a small profit for the club to use for future events.

What's wrong with a Rem700 anyways?!! ;) I didn't win but I kept up just fine, and all 36 rounds for the 600yard walk were on paper, and not just on the white.

Just received the email with the final scores ....10th overall !!!!!
I felt I shot well but after seeing the hardware the other shooters brought going into the match I had my expectations a lot lower .

First of all, I want to send out a huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone for coming out and participating in this event. It was great to meet so many new people who are just as dedicated to the sport as I am. All and all it was a fantastic couple of days.

I've been keeping up with the posts on this thread and would like to clear some things for everyone about any of the topics I feel important. If i didn't comment on a specific topic that was discussed on this thread. Its because I deem it unimportant and I won't waste my time with it. That being said...

The low cost for entree fee and the expenses.
The reason why it was $20 was to do exactly what it did. Bring in every type of shooter from all over Ontario. (Hopefully next year we can change that to Canada) This was the first year I have ever organized an event on my own with the support of the Petawawa Gun Club to which I can't thank enough for helping me. Because it was my first year I knew there would be hiccups along the way and I wanted to ensure regardless of how the event went, that all shooters would be happy and not felt they wasted their money.

As you have read from the shooters who came, it was for the most part a huge success. Now that I have those shooters out there to spread the word of this event. Next year the higher cost ($50) will not discourage shooters from coming.

Myself being out money.
I respect shooters offering to help cut my costs however I don't believe costs and expenses should be anyone's issues except mine. I'll let you know I broke even as I planned it. And I won't comment anymore about this. Thank you though.

For anyone that would like to see photos and videos, look up the Petawawa Gun Club facebook page. (I think its actually a person not a group) Also, if you have pictures, I'd love if you guys sent them to my email. I was too busy to get any of my own :)

On a final note, I didn’t get an opportunity at the end of the day to thank my girlfriend, Shawna, for all of her help on competition day, as well as the several months of work leading up to the competition. Without her, none of this competition would have happened. Essentially, I’m just a guy that enjoys shooting guns. She is the mastermind that put it all together.

I feel crappy about missing this shoot since I had registered for it(blame Wainwright) but it looks like it was a blast. As a sniper in the CAF I think it would be very easy for me to arrange this display and famil shoot. If i'm still in the Group next year I will do everything I can to make it happen!
