Lamest, phoniest "hunt" that I have ever seen!!

I was channel surfing tonight and came across a 'hunting' show called Southwest Outdoors, and there was a bunch of Aodad sheep at a feeder... behind a fence... these things were eating like cattle in a corral. It was a goddamn farm, as I define it...

Next thing you see an arrow come whizzing across the screen and smoked one of those 'wild' sheep. Then buddy goes off arm pumping, chasing after it.

After he finds the dead sheep, he says, "I've been hunting these for years and yeah we went back to a spot where so-and-so had seen sheep yesterday and blah, blah, blah... Trophy-Of-A-Lifetime".

Trophy of a lifetime!? Are you kinding!?

And I was like, did I just see that!? Excuse me!? I... went to where buddy saw sheep yesterday!? It was a f**king feeder!! I can guarantee that as soon as those 'hunters' cart off their prized 'trophy of a lifetime'... yeah, the guy actually called it that!! The goddamn sheep will be back at the feeder. It was a f**king farm!!

Watched one of those shows where they were in Africa. The hunter was in a blind the size of a cabin made of stone and mortar. It over looked an artificial water hole that looked like a swimming pool. Animals walked up to drink and then the hunter would shoot them at 20 yards with a cross bow.

You could almost see the little train full of kids touring them around this zoo.
They need to call these shows " How to shoot in a zoo " and not hunting programs. Whats next combined Rhino, polar bear, and penguin hunts all in one convenient location.

i recently watched a documentery on hunting in africa. Almost every hunt you see from over there is in a high fenced ranch. They took their old cattle farms and convereted them into game ranches. They actually raise animals so they can be shot. They even raise lions and let them out on the farm when someone wants to hunt one of them. Personally, i think thats all a bunch of bull####. But, from trhe ranchers point of view it made sense as well. A lot of the animals that they raise would almost be extinct if it was not for these people breeding them to be shot. Its kind of ass backwards but it works. Very interesting show to watch. To bad i cant remember the name of it.

Some of those TV hunting shows are lame alright.

As for the ranches in Texas and elsewhere, they go both ways. There are some with the animals behind high fences, eating at feeders, and so forth.

There are countless private ranches that run into the hundreds or even thousands of sections (that's square miles). If that doesn't fall within the definition of free range, I don't know what you'd call it.

Curious how you feel about hunting / killing bear over a bear bait or ducks over decoys or deer near a food plot or moose / elk over a mating call or what about camo, scent blocker, tree stands or ground blinds. Where is the point that makes the hunt unethical? That is likely a moving point depending on the view point of the individual. It's like, what is unnatural ### - it's ### that is one step beyond what any one individual thinks is normal - missionary for some, leather and whips for others.

Possibly the only true ethical hunting is the walk and stalk using a spear. I don't know....I'm just asking.

A bear bait or deer bait in wilderness is not even close to the same as this.
The hunt I saw was on a fenced, managed farm. They had huge mechanical feeders. The sheep were in an area, with a fence right beside them.
When the guy said they went back to where they'd seen sheep the day before I just about puked...

I really don't care about the killing of the sheep. People kill and butcher animals every day, just don't make the pretense that it was a hunt, which this guy did.

I never said it was unethical, I said was it was phoney.

Yep mostly private fenced concessions in Texas and in Africa but usually 1000's of acres can drive around and never see a fence. As afar as sitting it a blind at a water hole. People do it all the time right here in Canada and the US for Antelope and other species.
I get so sick of a$$es that always speak about everyone elses hunting practises like you are so high and mighty. Good quality hunting may someday only be available behind a fence, I agree it should be fair chase and ethical. But we as hunters should stand up and support one another it is no wonder the dam antis are so powerful. As far as seeing a fence who is to say that it doesn't run for miles and miles. A farm I hunt has a fence on one side and the deer feed in the bean field not much difference really. I agree these shows need to do a better job of showing the fair and ethical part of it as well not just the killing part

I saw the same show and yeah it was funny. The sheep were at a feeder that was in a tiny fenced off area. I imagine the shooter could have stabbed one with a swiss army knife if he'd wanted to. "Fair chase and ethical"? I don't know nor do I particularly care (both terms are too wishy washy and open to individual interpretation) as long as he was legal and the sheep got appropriately used.

I, personally, wouldn't hunt that situation but others may.

At least it wasn't Colorado Buck. Man I hate that Billy Cyrus wannabe poser.

Sadly, much of southern Africa is falling under high fence or game fence but if you are willing to search a bit, there are still lots of free range opportunities over there.

I don't think it is a matter of ethics really, there just comes a point where hunting becomes shopping.

I know a guy in Dawson Creek that raises and sells Bison, you can get it killed and chilled or you can go into a small pasture and shoot it yourself first. It is not unethical because it is what it is........a Bison farm.He makes no bones about it,it ain`t hunting.I`d rather take one up Pink Mountain way on a real hunt but if I didn`t get the draw and wanted the meat I would just buy one from him all cut and wrapped.I don`t really want to shoot it in a 2 acre pasture and take "trophy photo`s but some do I guess.
Personally ,if it was my farm I would`nt alow it,better to just run it into the chute and pop it then butcher it.No f#ck ups that way.

Hunting is beating the bushes for days and not getting anything. In the way of game that is. It is hearing the wind in the trees, birds, tracks, lots of tracks. Getting wet, cold, lost or at last turned around, getting back to a warm camp and stories, lots of stories. It is wonderful.

exactly, call a spade a spade. i have no problem with going to a bison farm and shooting one for the freezer. i'd expect it to be cheaper since i would be doing the skinning/dressing. no different than shooting a beef IMO.

alot of those hunting shows need to be taken with a grain of salt. i think i posted about one where the mule deer was "35" (guide) or "28" (host) inches wide and i'd guess they'd have been lucky if it was 22". i also spoken with people that have been in some shows (guides) and yes, the stuff they have been in on has been fair chase and maybe then some (lots of "it's too far away for the camera, lets find another") the "shot" if often re-enacted after the fact.

Stupidest hunting show on the air here is Walter Pidgeon,it`s the only one we get here.Hunting in the Rough. What an annoying Asshat. He spends half the show talking about ethical hunting and the importance of practice and then Hail Mary`s an arrow at a running Cariboo at 80 yards.Shoots little black bears off a 45 gallon barrel of bait and huffs and puffs like he walked 20 miles and stopped a killer charge with one well placed shot.:sniper:

So hunting basically sucks in the Ottawa Valley?:D

Hunting for me is whackin the two supp tags on the opening two days and then watching hundreds of deer while you wait for a good buck. (Not that I shot one the last two years -- nailed little ones cause the kids were with me).

It's THOMAS Pigeon BTW. His eider shooting show is the one that bothered me. No way all those birds were retrieved.

This year was not the best. But we got a few. Wolves and coyotes are the worst I have ever seen. The area we hunt is rough and a 100 yard shot is about the limit. We use dogs or would likely not see anything. Some places in the valley [farmland] there are lots of deer. I own a small farm and could shoot deer anytime but it is not the same. Would like to go to Alberta some day and try my luck.:D
