If you were going to buy a standard cartridgem (Non-magnum) as a general purpose round, that would see lot's of range time, and used for deer sized critters, what would you want? .7mm-08, .308, .270, .280 or 30-06? I think these are all very useful cartridges, and all do the same job. But what would you prefer? I don't care about the '06's ability to go up to 220 grains, or how flat the .270 is. Just as a great rifle, what would you pick?

All but the .308 (Just never liked them no real reason) For the others I owned a 7mm 08 and it was a great cartridge but did not like the gun. I own both the 270 and 30/06 and they are both great! My brother has a 280 and I can't find fault with it either.

You said "a lot of bench time" so - 308.
Good bullet choices, lots of components available, cheap suplus ammo if you are so inclined, short action, efficient case, less powder consumption, etc. Now if you wanted a hunting rig, I would go with an '06 case (270,280, 30) just for the ability to throw heavier bullets faster.

Cheers

Holy cow....this has been done MANY times before.
Let me give you the coles notes version:

The 270/06 guys will get their undies in a knot because you EXPRESSLEY stated no 30/06, the .450-.455-45/70 guys will sing the praises of the big bores (and their place in history) and bartell will show up and reccomend the .260 (good cart. BTW), then someone else will deliver a lecture about shooting 7.62 surplus in a .308 chamber, followed by about 10 reccomendations of the 6.5 swede.

At the end of the day: 7/08 if you reload (faster/flatter/more accurate then the .308 with less recoil), .308 if you shoot factory ammo (lots of selection, surplus available)

Cheers,

Ryan

356 Winchester easy to carry, good range 200+ yards, easy on brass once you find some. It will handle just about anything in North America except maybe big bears. Versatile down load with pistol bullets.

If you're serious about the 'general' part of general purpose, then it's the .30-06. Find a 180 grain load you like (there's even a couple at 2900 fps...) and you're set for all of North America.

If you mean 'mostly deer', then the .260 Rem and 7mm-08 (or the originals: 6.5x55 SE and 7x57 Mauser) can't be beat.
