Maybe you should consider rebarrelling the Savage and putting it in a better stock. I have / had one of those package gun in 300WM. I immediately swapped on a Leupold scope. The gun did not shoot to my standards. First shot was usually good, but after that it wandered all over, usually upward. After replacing just about everything but the bolt and receiver, wasting countless $$$ in ammo, I have to conclude it was a bad barrel. Now I can shoot 5 rounds into a tight group with the new barrel, which was a take off heavy barrel from another savage. So even savage has their good and bad days in barrel making. I wouldnt' recommend a heavy barrel though for a deer rifle. The Tikka T3 lite in 308 will be as accurate as you need in all likelihood. I just can't comment on shooting a deer at that distance as I've never done it. Only shot at gongs and paper at great distance.
