Maybe you should consider rebarrelling the Savage and putting it in a better stock. I have / had one of those package gun in 300WM. I immediately swapped on a Leupold scope. The gun did not shoot to my standards. First shot was usually good, but after that it wandered all over, usually upward. After replacing just about everything but the bolt and receiver, wasting countless $$$ in ammo, I have to conclude it was a bad barrel. Now I can shoot 5 rounds into a tight group with the new barrel, which was a take off heavy barrel from another savage. So even savage has their good and bad days in barrel making. I wouldnt' recommend a heavy barrel though for a deer rifle. The Tikka T3 lite in 308 will be as accurate as you need in all likelihood. I just can't comment on shooting a deer at that distance as I've never done it. Only shot at gongs and paper at great distance.

I dont think I would sink all that extra money into your Savage if it does not have the Accutrigger though. After spending $200 on a stock and $300 on glass you still would have a Savage with a crummy trigger.

For under $1000 go look at the Tikka T3, Win M70, Ruger M77, Savage 114 Classic, Rem 700. One of those will cry out to you!!!

Throw a better stock, high end glass , and an Accutrigger on it and it will be all you will ever want. My Savage 116FCSS wears a dialed in Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 and already took 2 deer this year on opening and third day of the season at 200 and 150 yards respectively.

How do you like this rifle? I take it this is the one with the accustock? What caliber did you go with? How is the fit/finish on the metal and the accustock, does anything feel cheap or flimsy? Any good pics of the rifle?

I have a savage 114 american classic with the accutrigger and i have shot friends tikkas and let me tell you in no way the tikka is as good as the savage. In my opinion anyway.

I have the pre-accustock model that does feel flimsy but it is a tack driver and used for hunting not showing, so I don't care. Mine is a 30-06 (bottom pic).

Other. I would swap the barrel out buy a aftermarket trigger and better optics this would give you a sub-moa rifle I would trust out to 500m.

If you're only budgetting $800 for rifle and all. I would go with Tikka T3 blued with average optics probably bushy or leupold rifleman that would fit within your budget.

Your savage NIB at the store is $450, so basically you're trying to get a rifle of "better quality" for $350 on top. If you check the EE there are currently a few Savage packages like yours for sale, that are not selling quickly. The last one that did sold for $325 shipped after a price adjustment. Food for thought.

i would suggest a new Winchester model 70 my choice. Best gun for you $

It is safe, reliable, accurate, buit strong and easy to use

or a browning bolt gun if you want a detachable magazine

i am not a fan of tikka and remington in your choice i would prefer ruger

I think the T3 would give you good service...you can always spend a bit more and upgrade to a Sako A7, it was a 100$ more when bought mine through Mountain Man outdoors...well worth it.

If you're seriously considering a 500 yard shot, you should get the most accurate rifle you can, otherwise you're just going to be a poor man's kevorkian to those animals. Have a feel for the animals. I'd rather be shot dead than gut shot anyday. I shoot a 25-06 Sako. The gun is S.S. and plastic... OK on looks, but not great... but the rifle doesn't miss... you do. By the way, I think the .270 is a great caliber. I went with the 25-06 cuz I'm a wus.

That is the problem I seem to be having with mine, I have swapped out the scope for a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 BDC and still can't get the gun to shoot under a 6 inch group. The first shot will be perfect but after that it will wander all over the place, I've used all kinds of different ammo and tried to work up several different loads all with the same results.

Also this is the one without the accutrigger so I'm not really interested in sinking any more money into this rifle.

Thanks for all the feedback, keep it coming

Push feed is for fags. Search for a pre '64 Model 70 in .30-06. If you require better than that buy a Holland and Holland with a Mauser action, but it will cost you another 20yr mortgage. Best of luck IHC.

Thanks for the suggestion but as I stated before I'm looking for a .270 for under the $800 range, if I wanted to use .30-06 I'd just take one of my Garands hunting:D

That's exactly why I'm thinking of upgrading, I just can't trust my Savage to make that shot.

I did just pick up a .25-06 on trade, it's an old Mauser 1908 that has been re-barreled with a .25-06 heavy barrel. I haven't shot it yet but depending on how it does it may get the call for next year.
