Where is the Moisin Nagant?????????????????????????????????You all forget about Russia in WW2???? Ever heard of Stalingrad????? Jeez you guys probably think Mexico is in South America!!! JITC

Previous polls leading to this one had Russian stuff on it. They didn't make the final cut.

If it makes you feel better I consider the SVT-40 better and far more influential on today's firearms designs than the Garand. ;)

I cant believe the Stg did not make it in this poll. It was the assault rifle!!
But its outta there:rolleyes:so i'll have to make due with the MG42, just hope Fritz does not turn up when changing out barrels or reloading.
Stg with about 16 mags would have been perfect.

:agree: 100% with you there! The LE doesn't belong here...

Sorry about the Lee, LOL it was in 4 th place but it took out the MP44 for 3rd place and held that position, so I had to put it in the final poll, I liked the Mark 5 jungle carbine, but we can't all get what we want, like me being able to spell. Now just need the 300 plus who voted to vote again on this one.

MG 42

Best (man portable, that is) machine gun design of WWII, and it's still being made today as the MG3. It introduced the quick change barrel that is standard on all modern machine guns. IIRC some 750,000 of them were made in WWII and God alone knows how many after the war.

Mhmm. They called it a buzzsaw for a reason. I remember hearing about how a man would be standing there one minute and then be in two pieces the next. I heard the most inane story that at the end of the war, a German pilot off his rocker strapped 4 Mg42's onto a biplane somehow and eneded up flying against the Russians in '45. He didn't live long, though I'm sure he helped out the Weremacht enough with his "WWI Shock and Awe" idea. It would be easy enough to hook them up I think. Anyways, just sharing a blast from the past.

HMM looks like this poll is going to stay the same with noe firearm bring knocked out of its position. Well time will tell when there are around 300 votes again.

I'm afraid I chose the garand, but only because the STG 44 wasn't on here.

Feel like the garand can offer the greatest degree of accuracy and support for its weight. Downside is ease of maintenance (or lack thereof) and extra weight, as well as costs in means of time, resources, training and repair.

MG 42 just weighs too much, needs too much spare ammo, and needs lots of equiptment. I'm also curious if the cost of manufacture and time/resources involved in making and fielding it made it worth it. Upside is that in the right place, it's a force of nature.

Enfield, well, I like them, but it's a bolt action. Easy to shoot, but just too many limiting factors. I feel like it edged the stg 44 out of the running simply because people know and feel a connection to the enfield, rather than a particular preference for performance.
Pros are that it's likely by far the cheapest to produce, easiest to maintain, most rugged and accurate. If I was going to walk off into the forest and never come back, this would be my gun.

I love all three and like all loyal Canadians love my Lee Enfield, but the MG 42 represents the most advanced MG at the time and the basis for most of the current mg's today.

I voted for the .303. Since I have zero chance of being called upon to storm the beaches of Normandy, I sort of imagined which I'd want to have if the world ended and the zombies invaded. The Lee Enfield will just keep working, the ten-round mag will keep me in the fight for a couple shots longer *but* I can still top it off easily, and it's a lot more portable than a belt-fed MG.

But when the zombies attack en masse (they always do!) you'll be shouting "An MG42! An MG42! My Enfield for an MG42!"

;)
