I went out to probably one of the last gun shows last weekend in Rodney, ON I will probably go to with all that is going on which I wont mention. The show was well attended and a nice outing for my son and I. A guy had a BNIB Ruger 10/22 model 31139 which is optics only with grey plastic stock for $240 out the door. Already being a 10/22 fan for the price I figured why not get one more now everyone in the family has one! As mentioned I have several of them from different years, I find they work well are fun to customize but are not necessarily the most accurate things in the world but adequate for pest control and fun on the range.
I set this one up with a trigger I already had modded from another rifle and added a 4-12 power scope.

So on to the range, I set up a paper target with 10 1 inch bullseyes and shot from the bench at 50 yards with support of some bags up front. It was not really the best set up for accuracy as i had no rear bag but am very impressed with the results other than a few flyers no doubt caused by me shaking a bit. Accuracy was well within the 1 inch circles between .5-.75 ctc groups using American Eagle which is all I had on hand.

Personally I have been finding the newer 10/22s I have shot to be much better in terms of accuracy than the older models. Perhaps I just got a really good barrel.

POST EDIT

I decided to swap the grey stock that came with the rifle to a Boyds Blaster I found in the EE and swap to a different scope. A fixed power 10x banner. I also swapped triggers to an old metal one that I did a fair amount of work on to make it nice and crisp. Im very happy with the build overall and it has a great balance point for off hand shooting. I also have a short bipod for it but I really only use it on the bench.

Good for you for bringing ur son! I’d be more than pleased with your shooting results. Especially with an affordable bulk ammo. Cheers Chris

I gave up on 10/22s. I owned one that was great and sold it. bought 2 since and both where terrible so spent a bit more and bought a dlask tuff-22. Dlasks are cheaper buy the time you spend all the money getting a ruger to shoot good.

I more or less regard 10/22s as a hobby. I buy them used, upgrade the sights and primarily use factory parts which I find here and there used as well. I view 10/22s as fun 10-30 yard guns which work best with open sights. Which at those distances pretty much any rifle can shoot better than I can. For long range I have other things but have found the newest one I got seems to do quite reasonably.

What ammo are you using and did you clean it before you started shooting?

federal value box shot well out of my bolt action so i tried it in the 10/22, it doesn't like it. funny enough i tried some winchester stuff i had laying around and its significantly better. i did do a thorough cleaning before going to the range. ill be doing some polishing in the near future to help the break in period along.

any suggestions would be helpful

I have always found Federal blue box to be my last resort ammo. I chrony'd it years ago and got velocities as low as 700fps. I prefer Blazer and for some reason American Eagle seems to have a better powder charge and is light on the wallet.

Ricochet.. as for the stickers I shot it without them and am still rather impressed, perhaps i have a special rifle. Before this one I would have said the best way to improve accuracy in a 10/22 is to remove the scope...Sure are fun thoug!

i did a lot of polishing over the last day or so, receiver, bolt, hammer, seer, even the recoil spring rod. seems to cycling a lot more freely. went back to the range and shot another 120 rounds or so. still got some stove pipes but with a lot less frequency. Honestly i find this pretty lame for a gun manufacturer to put out something so rough and ask for premium pricing at $500.

what do you guys normally run in your 10/22? i'm guessing cci mini mags are probably a safe bet for reliability.?
