Pics of a new Shorty 454 - and here's a shorter one yet!!

There is nothing like a 454 Casull going off in the palm of your hands and then seeing a huge hole in the target. The recoil is awesome to experience but it is definately not more than a fellow can handle.

The Ruger SRH as far as I am concerned is the largest handgun that can be carried easily and they are bullet proof.....

I'm now starting to lean towards the 9.5" barrel length for the new SRH and if I am not happy with it send it to Gunnar to cut it down to 7" or 7.5" but put the same front sight style rib on it as his shorter barrel models. I talked to him today and he figures he can do the rib for the longer barrels as well. It will be a little trickier to do though due to the taper of the barrel.

You just have to rub salt in that wound dont you :p :D

Ahhhhh, maybe after huntin season is over I will start thinking about a new revolver. Bought far too many toys this year to justify a new one right now, but hey Christmas is comin :D

For the time being, this little popper will have to do ;)

Do I see 41 mag on the barrel? 41mags are an awesome performer that should have taken off a lot better than they did sort of like my 10mm's. 10mm's (.400") and 41mags are classed in the same group of handgun cartridge bear stoppers by the way. The 41 mags do give far better performance than the 10mm's though.

That is a nice looking compact gun but think about having only a slightly larger gun that produces more than 1 1/2 times the power......

I thought that when I bought my 44mag last year that it would do for me what I wanted but I kept finding myself feeling undergunned so left the 629 at home and carried the SRH instead.

I don't mean to rub it in I just have such a hard time not sharing my enthusiasm for the SRH and the 454 Casull cartridge..... :dancingbanana:

Ok I've posted my 629 for sale on the EE so if anyone is interested in an awesomely accurate, in excellent condition 44mag and wants to help me get my SRH to Gunnar in a timely manner go check my post out and buy my gun. :)

Hey Gunnar, the shorty looks great.I have a question though, Does it still have the awful trigger, that every Ruger revolver I've ever tried, has.I'd love to have a shorty 454, but am still in love with the S&W trigger on revolvers.
This one has a really slick trigger, and it's never been touched.

With a little smoothing up and a spring kit, these Rugers end up at least better than any stock S&W :) Can I get them as smooth and light as one of my 6 1/2 lb S&W's (double action pull) - no, and I don't want to, for a gun meant to preserve your life ...

Gunnar - have you ever shortened a S&W .500S&W X frame to 4,1/4"? If so, anything to say about that package for utility? Does nthe bbl need porting to make a short .500 manageable?

No I have not, and it's really not readily doable from what I see :(

Well Ardent I guess you need to get a new gun then because there is absolutely no problems with firing 45 Colts in my SRH.

I do make sure that after firing a lot of 45 Colts that I clean the cylinder before I fire my 454 Casulls again though.

As I understand the issue is th esame as any other revolver that fires a short and longer magnum cartridge combo, it is just more pronounced with the 454. Because the 454 operates at such high pressures there is a potential problem if you shoot a lot of 45Colt (which can build up a lot of powder residue in the cylinder chambers) and then fire hot high! pressure loads without removing the residue, you could bulge the cylinder. IIRC Freedom Arms mentions this at some point, the recommendation is to clean the chambers to remove the powder residue before firing 454 loads, otherwise they work absolutely fine in the SRH [and are damned accurate in my shortened gun ;) ]
Cheers

How does your SRH handle .45 Long Colts? I heard issues regarding shooting .45LC's in .454's despite being advertised as a .38/.357 type deal, something to do with rim thickness. If it works like a hot damn, I'd say I need a new gun. :p

Haha, well aww shucks :D I think I should put myself down for one of those in .454 and get Gunnar to work his magic... What a sweet looking piece.

I bet that list is getting pretty long right about now! They are a blast with the shorter barrel.

Cheers

I know that I am crazy thinking this way but I'm sitting here dreaming of having the 4.25" 5.5" a 7.5" and maybe someday a 9.5" all matching with Gunnars front sight rib.

I'm going to start with getting Gunnar to shorten my 7.5" to the 4.25" right away and then get a new 7.5" and after the baby is born (my wife is 3 1/2 months pregnant) and I can maybe afford anything for myself again I'll send off the 7.5" to Gunnar and get him to do his magic on it as well.

I also want him to tune the guns and install spring kits at the same time for the best trigger that he can get for me. :dancingbanana: :D :runaway: :D :dancingbanana:

God, do I ever want one of these.

Gunnar, if you've got the SRH's in stock, how much for one of the cut jobs, shipped, with taxes in?

Thanks,

Brad

I recieved my new SRH today and I will hopefully get to the club as soon as possible (tomorrow would be really good) to figure out which of my SRH's is more accurate.

Then I can send the least accurate of the 2 off to Gunnar... :dancingbanana:

Camp,

Where did you purchase your SRH? I emailed Wholesale, but as they don't list any pistols on their website anymore, they may not carry the ruger line of revolvers.
