Pics of the new Sig 556

Why wouldn't they manufacture the authentic SG55X in the States instead? I realize it's probably because of the immense popularity of AR15 magazines they decided to come out with a new lower. But why did they dedicate so many resources to developing the 556 and marketing it, in the end to come out with a product that no-one inthe US seems to like, and the market that would like it (Canada), cannot get it. Yet the PE90, which I'd really like to own, costs an incredible $3,000, which is out of my reach. What is the reasoning behind all this?

It's all to do with US import laws, and costs for tooling up and making things. The upper is basically from the SG550 with cosmetic differences, and altered to be bolted onto the US-made lower. They've had to make it somewhat different so that it doesn't run afoul of the prohibition on the import of barrels for non-sporting firearms under 18 USC 925(d)(3). Plus it has to have a fair number of US-made parts so it doesn't trip over 18 USC 922(r).

Using CNC tooling to machine an aluminum lower receiver, and using an M4 collapsible stock is also a lot cheaper than copying the real thing. That's why it's cheaper. Also the finish looks cheaper, looks like regular parkerising on the 556, the PE90 has a tougher finish.

AR-15 magazines also cost peanuts compared to the PE90 mags. Labour costs in Switzerland being higher, etc. But you get what you pay for, IMO.

But at least they're trying.
