a sdkfz 232 radio car, you could dive them either direction, for such an early armoured car they were very fast and since reverse had as many gears as forward they could get out of trouble as fast as they got into it

Anyone know the purpose or meaning of this Sherman tank marking?

I'm thinking this is an exercise in the UK and not during combat in Europe. Thanks.

That's a French tank, is it not?

Hungarian.

For those interested and if you can find a copy (its apparently sold out on the Mushroom Model Publications site), this is supposed to be a very good book on Hungarian Armour in WW2: Magyar Steel by Csaba Becze.

I don't have a copy (yet) but here is one review. I have read others recommending this book: http://www.missing-lynx.com/reviews/axis/magyarsteelbookreviewgp_1.html

To the best of my knowledge, there is not much written in English on WW2 Hungarian armour.

No problem. Being in North America we seem to be so focused on German, American, British and Canadian armour. Especially German. Finally we are acknowledging the tremendous role and sacrifice made by the Russians on the Eastern front.

But there is still a lot to learn about the roles played by other nationalities like the Poles, Hungarians, Rumanians, Australians, French, Italians etc...

Fantastic picture yourself!I never knew the Hungarians made their own tank either.I did find this in the net though.
:40M Turán I was a Hungarian tank of World War II - a total of 424 were made in two variants: Turan I with a 40 mm gun and Turan II with a 75 mm gun. It was based on the design of the Czechoslovak Škoda T-21 medium tank prototype. The Turan was employed by the 1st and 2nd Hungarian Armored Divisions, as well as the 1st Cavalry Division, in 1943 and 1944. Both types were hopelessly outclassed by the Soviet's superior T-34 and IS-2 tanks. The vehicle's combat début was not until April 1944 in Galicia with the 2nd Armored, during which that division lost a quarter of their tanks and failed to achieve their objectives, mostly due to the inadequacies of the Turans.

There is only one known surviving Turán II. It is on display at the Kubinka Tank Museum.

From what I've read in 'The Forgotten Soldier' and "Black Edelweiss" (and depending on how soon after capture this was taken) he is probably still quite confused as to the whole situation. And he probably very exhasted, and hungry.
