Picture of the day

Probably shot them right after the photo was taken.

I know a lot of these very young German soldiers were recruited for the final defense of Germany right at the end of the war. The Americans didn't like that they would not give up until their ammunition ran out and so executed them immediately after surrender, SS or not.

I don't think recruited is the right word, impressed is more like it, there was no choice.

Grizz

I am not sure I agree with that eather. Most of thoes kids if not born under the nazi rule were at least educated by it and like the japanese then and todays isis, taliban, and al queda were fanatical hardline belivers in that system. They had been brain washed from birth to belive above all elts. Many of thoes kids were not recruited nor impressed but lined up to join.

Ya war is hell. I shed no tears for dead Nazis.

The Lockheed Constitution was the largest fixed-wing aircraft to ever operate with the U.S. Navy, and yep, that apparently includes the Martin Mars.

Two were built.

Wikipedia says they were chronically underpowered, and the only way to keep the engines cool enough in flight was to fly with the engine flaps open a bit, which caused drag and a commensurate reduction in range.

The Navy flew them for five years and then determined they couldn't afford to fly them anymore. They offered them on lease to the airlines, but no one wanted them. They were flown to Arizona for storage. Both airframes and 13 spare engines were sold in 1955.

BuNo 85163 was flown to Las Vegas and used as a billboard for Alamo Gas. Howard Hughes had it scrapped when he bought the land.

BuNo 85164 was flown to Florida where she languished until the 1970s, when she was scrapped due to local pressure. Apparently the folks at Opa-Locka didn't like looking at a big white elephant.

At that age I doubt they were true nazis. By the end Germany was throwing uniforms onto anyone still alive no matter the age.

Really, just take a look at the "socially engineered" progenies being turned out by our education system/media today.

By 1936 Nazis were in firm control of the education system/media and the products of that social experiment, which they borrowed from the Soviets, were and are still very much in our faces today.

A friend of mine was Austrian Hitler Youth, at 10 years of age. He told me he was fanatical about everything to do with National Socialism and that it was pounded into them mentally and physically every day. The very few holdouts to this indoctrination, were persecuted, by being turned away at grocery stores, blacklisted for jobs, not allowed to mix socially, etc. They didn't have to be Jews or any other of the not popular to government types. They just had to say "no" to the social engineering.

Just like present day Canada, most citizens just acquiesced and became the WOKE of their day.

If you want a slightly humorous take on this watch "Jojo Rabbit" the battle scenes are particularly funny IMHO.

Today Mother's Day, I leave a tribute to all mothers who gave their children the war.
May 3, 2020

CRUZ OF WAR
When they came to say the poor mother.
Your son had died there in the war,
She kneeled shaking feeling good,
The deepest heartbreak on earth.

They brought you the War Cross that your son,
As a brave soldier, he deserved it.
On her mother landed the lackluster look,
Remembering the beloved son who had lost.

At the War Cross, mom caught it, like who feels it.
Remembering the divine dream I had dreamed of.
With tenderness put her softly,
In the cradle that had cradled it in a little one,

Poor holy mother of heaven in the middle of winter,
Pull yourself packing the crib and saying,
Sleep sleep beloved son eternal sleep
How eternal is my pain for losing you,

Mom threw it in this contrast,
Sleep sleep beloved son your sleep,
Because of the War Cross you won
How many moms crying like me

Quadras: Song of 1935, inspired by the Portuguese participation in World War I. The author of the lyrics is Armando Neves, who even won a literary award this year.
Miguel Ramos musiced the poem and delivered the song to Berta Cardoso, one of the exponents of the fado until the 50. s. It was a success on the radio.
The song was sung again in the 60 s, now by the fadist Isabel Oliveira. Considering the lyrics and sadness that it transmitted, it was no longer successful on the radio.
The overseas war spread and, at the ceremonies on June 10, every year the president of the republic, the president of the council and members of the government delivered medals to the Portuguese military that distinguished themselves in the war. Some of these medals were delivered posthumously.

I understand that a soldier may offer to surrender, but you don't have to accept the offer.
Feel free to shoot any Nazis you see as far as I'm concerned.

Like where ? a Trump rally ? Hate to tell you but you do have a couple little inconveniences called the Geneva Convention and law of armed conflict that say otherwise. Did "battle field justice" events take place, pretty safe bet they did.

A little light reading on the subject for todays soldier

USS Benham (DD796) was laid on 23 April 1943 at Bethlehem Steel Company, Staten Island, NY. And was built in less than eight months, being commissioned 20 Dec of the same year.
She saw extensive service and was part of the massive Allied fleet in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945.
Decommissioned on 18 October 1946 in San Diego, she spent five years on Long Beach’s red lead row before being recalled to the colours in 1951 to participate in the new war in Korea.
Just after new life was brought to the veteran ship, a young starlet named Marilyn Monroe, who had done her part as a war industry worker herself in the previous conflict, visited her stateside.
On June 19, renowned Hollywood photographer John Florea accompanied Marilyn on a trip to the Benham at Long Beach, where she was being made ready to sail for the East Coast...

According to the Geneva Convention:

"2. It is forbidden to kill or injure an enemy who surrenders or who is hors decombat."

These are very dangerous and irresponsible words. I know this is the internet but give some thought to the second and third order consequences.
