Picture of the day

Well, my last contract was long before that happened in 76 and I kept out of it after that.

Came out of Brazil with enough rough emeralds, diamonds and semi precious stones to tide me over, until I felt like I could enter the workforce and behave in a reasonably normal, for the time, manner. I still have some of the semi precious stones sitting on a display shelf in my living room. One has been cut for a male ring, but never mounted. They all have a memory.

SOF was a last resort to find employment.

Usually hiring recruitments came up on different venues, mostly in European papers and the odd South American daily papers back then. We didn't have the internet. There were a couple back in the early 70s in Montreal papers and one notable ad in the old Vancouver Sun back in 78 by Col Foster, out of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). I heard he got shut down during the middle of his first day.

SOF got around the rules by 'selling' the poster on the back outside cover of the magazine;

I'm not sure how effective it was.

Private Military Contractor.

Merc went out when Soldier of Fortune magazine folded.:p

Or as many people say: "contractor" for the short form. I then laugh as many people think as in construction/general contractor. "So what did you do over there as a contractor? Drywall? Electrician?" LOL. Most people cant connect the dots. I never tire at looking at their faces when the term contractor is fully explained to them. Yuou can just see the wheels in their heads turning while they process it and then the look of surprise when they put it all together.

Weapons training for Cuban and MPLA soldiers - Angolan Civil War

Your pic of the MPLA brought back some uncomfortable memories.

Even the Cuban Instructors didn't want to be seen with their leaders. They were a very nasty bunch, mostly bandits/perverts/psychopaths.

Appx half of their "soldiers" were 15 or younger, mostly younger. Some could barely handle the weight of their loaded weapon and if they couldn't, were given a Machete instead.

Going against a ten year old with a Machete, whacked out on opium or whatever and fueled by a desire to please, watered down by fear, is one of the most unnerving things that can happen to any individual.

Any adherence to rules of engagement disappear instantly. Once that line is crossed????????? It all depends on the inner strength of the individual and the depth of previous Social Engineering

They had a hodge podge of weapons, from home made pipe guns to the most modern firearms given to them by the Cubans, through the Soviets and of course the ever present but seldom seen Chinese/N. Koreans. They had a lot of battlefield pick ups as well.

The Cubans were a definite force multiplier for the MPLA. They taught them how to use RPGs and Mortars. Taught them a modicom of discipline and culled many of the mentally deranged by putting them into "special ops units" and sending them on the most dangerous missions.

Very nasty people that became part of the political wing of their present regime.

When I went up against them, they really didn't have any coherence and were mostly just a raggedy, bunch of vicious criminals, with no political leanings whatsoever. The Cubans changed all of that, under the tutelage of the Chinese and Soviet directors.

Incredible planes. I can still remember the first one I saw, when I was 8 years old. The Vernon Winter Carnival arranged for a fly over by the local clubs and pilots and a few from out of the interior.

The hit of the almost rooftop level flyover, along Main Street was the single Mosquitoe. It was deafeningly loud and everything shook as it passed by. There were claims that windows were broken.

Whatever, it was one of the biggest thrills of my life, up to that point.

Highlight KF Aerospace Centre for Excellence and do a search. They describe the plane that is now being refurbed in Victoria.
