My grandfather is on the Runnymede memorial. Flew for the ATA not the RAF and tragically went missing 2 weeks after VE day flying a Hawker Tempest off the NW coast of the UK. No trace of him or the aircraft has ever been found.
Operation Husky, DAY +80 today and my veteran passenger for the parade down Wellington street on the opening of the Canadian War Museum. I thought I had a grumpy old vet to drive along with till he saw the Betty Grable picture on the dash, turned to and asked if I knew who she was, I replied yes, and he comes back with, she is preety hot. With the ice broken he tells me about his ship being toredoed going to Sicily, getting fished out of the Mediterrainean, spending three months in North Africa getting rekitted with vehicles and guns, then off to Italy to get into the fighting. One of the greatest generation.
I have now rediscovered Clara Bow, the "It Girl" of 1920's cinema. Here's a promotional still from Wings, the first movie to win an Oscar for Best Picture.
Clara has a smile that'll just slay you.
If you'd like to see the movie, it's on YouTube in it's 2012 restored edition:
Worth a watch. Good story, damned good acting, if a little "stagey" and Clara's unbelievably cute.
Can't forget Marlene Dietrich. That jawline and those cheekbones.
Fun fact. She was travelling with the USO so perilously close to the front lines, that it perpetually gave Eisenhower heartburn. When they crossed over the river into Germany proper, Eisenhower tasked Bradley with getting her back from the lines, because he was too terrified of her to take on the task directly himself. Marlene told them both to pound sand, and followed the boys all the way to Berlin.
Portugal, like Switzerland, ended up with quite a few interned Allied and Axis aircraft during the course of WWII. Rather than posting piecemeal, I'll link to original Fench website and Googlized English version.
