Picture of the day

Must be an early pic of Adolf Galland... so far it looks like he's only tagged a mouse.:p

The Germans painted a white bar on the tail of a pilots plane as a mark of a victory. So you wouldn't see anything in a cockpit shot. By the time WW2 started Galland already had a number of "Victories" from Spain. Great pilot and lucky as anyone who survived was.

Probably luckier. Both Hitler and Goering had it out for him. His only saviour was that he was too high profile for them to just kill. They gave him an Me262 squadron and told him to bugger off ... or the German equivalent of such. The book, "A Higher Call" talks about this. That book is well worth reading.

Sticking with B-17's

After the war, Stigler immigrated to Canada. And lived on the Lower Mainland of B.C.

My Dad, who was an artist, who's one passion was aviation art, was friends with Stigler. He did a painting of the famous flight. As well as a single of Stigler's ME 109 & also a portait of Stigler. My Dad also corresponded with Charles Brown in Florida & send him pencil drawings of the B-17 so he could put in the battle damage for the painting.

A pretty good cartoon, but not sure why they put that particular hull number on there, as the ARA Santa Fe (S-21) -- the former USS Catfish (SS-339) -- had been re-numbered and did not carry any number on her sail at the time.

He made general, so he must have had something going for him.

A great memory for you.

Totally agree, an interesting story sparing the B-17 and its crew plus it deals with flying in Afrika and the early use of ME262s

In the time my Dad knew Stigler, when he lived on the Lower Mainland of B.C. for the remainder of his life, he had some involvement with the "ME262 Project" in Washington State.

One time my Dad & I did a trip down to Washington we got a personal tour of the ME262 Project build area due to that connection with Mr. Stigler.

also how the german fighter squadrons were taken apart by the allied superiority during the retreat from North Africa and later over Germany. The life expectancy of a german pilot in 1944 was measured rather in days and weeks then in months. Sad thing to read.

That would have been sooooo coool, for everyone involved. Image having a 262 combat veteran look over your project to ensure it was correct. I'm sure he knew all kinds of interesting stuff about that plane.
