Picture of the day

There was a Russian sub moored outside of Vancouver for a while (New Westmeinster Quay) - pretty interesting, really cramped ....

There's a WWII sub moored in San Fransisco also that can be toured.

And another in San Diego, and what a total POS it was. The Soviet Navy had elected to paint the interior the single ghastliest shade of Institutional Yellow available. It's the same yellow in old psych hospitals and cancer wards. The whole interior is a forest of valves, pipes, and opportunities to die of mechanical malfunction or concussion.

A truly awful place to spend time. Never understood the "romance" of submarine warfare.

Here's an Ostfront photo:

I think that the Toronto Harbour Commission still has its offices there, although there is almost no chance of seeing the water out their window any more...

Oh, most definitely Hawkshadow. Although dwarfed by downtown now, it is still a large impressive Limestone building. The Steakhouse/Restaurant entrance is the large front doors on the main floor. Upper floors, who knows? The Harbour Authority still has a reason of existence so...

Some very interesting WW1 3D pictures! YES, 3D! from this site.

The translation from this site:

A photography studio based in the city of Toronto has found a stereoscopic camera, accompanied by slides taken during the First World War. The end result is simply stunning!

Who would have thought that could one day take pictures "animated" and pseudo 3D of the First World War? Anyway, these pictures are indeed real, and now available on the web, thanks to a photography studio who got lucky in the discovery he made!

The stereoscopic camera in question perhaps in the attic of one of your (rear) grandparents cache: it is a Verascope, used at the time by French soldiers. The slides are available which depict scenes in the trenches in the streets and on the battlefield.
