The Hitlerites are coming. You have a bunch of wee arty tractors, some AT guns, and a welder. This is the result.

And the homebrewed version:

Achtungpanzer.com tells me this is the "7.5cm PaK 40/4 auf Raupenschlepper Ost Selbstfahrlafette". Looks like a quick way to meet your ancestors.

It was a kick-ass AT gun too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/57_mm_anti-tank_gun_M1943_(ZiS-2)

Development started in May 1940 and in the beginning of 1941 the gun was adopted as 57-mm anti-tank gun model 1941 (ZiS-2) (Russian: 57-мм противотанковая пушка образца 1941 года (ЗиС-2)). Production began on June 1, 1941 but on December 1st, 1941 it was stopped by marshals N. N. Voronov and G. L. Govorov, their explanation being that ZiS-2 shells [went] right through weakly armored German tanks without doing much harm inside. Other possible reasons for the decision were high cost of the gun and problems with shell production. By then, 371 pieces were built.

The production lines were switched to manufacturing of the ZiS-3 76.2 mm divisional gun, while Soviet anti-tank artillery received cheaper 45 mm guns. Some anti-tank regiments also received the ZiS-3, which was able to defeat any German vehicle until late 1942.

I'm sure you would have enjoyed military prison...H:S:

to tell the truth the only difference between a sten and an MP38u40 is the external length of the mag, (back to front) and some ergonomics.

Reliability would have been the same, unless you got a defective gun.

given the mags already are interchangable between guns, and it may have been the difference between fighting house to house with 2 SMGs in a squad, or 5 SMGs in a squad, and the fact that you dont have to hold bare metal on the mp 40 in the frosty mornings, i suspect an awful lot of mp40s got picked up by allied troops

mp40

A coach at our boxing club ; Ev Nieman commanded a squad of tanks in WW2. A gentleman as well; get that straight before the story begins.
One of the tank crew in his squad obtained a MP-40. But the fellow took it into the armourer and had the bolt spring cut down somewhat, changed the rate of fire enough that he was safe from being under constant scrutiny after firing it.
If he was out of sight whomever heard the ' Schmiesser' ( I know that's wrong, but that was the term Ev used) went on high alert as the sound of the Erma put everyone on guard.
Better gun than a Sten, Ev said.

If I understand you correctly you are saying that the magazines between the STEN and the MP-40 are interchangeable. On the contrary they are not even close. However, the internal spring of the STEN magazine can be taken out and used to replace defective springs in the MP-40 magazine.

^ (lanshoka) I am not so sure your statement is totally right (or wrong for that matter) regarding the "interchangability" between Sten and MP40 magazines. A Sten mag does not go into a MP40 but a MP40 mag just goes into and clicks in place a Sten. Holding the two side by side I see no reason the MP40 mag would not function in a Sten. Taking this one step further when I had a chance I tested a Sten mag in the C1 SMG and it worked fine and the word was back then was a MP40 mag would function in a C1 SMG the same way (I never had my MP40 back then or I would have tried it out). I believe further the "we can use German 9mm ammo but they cannot use our 9mm ammo" from WWII had something to do with the cannular on the round and extractor size/shape relationship, but I will leave that for far more knowledgeable persons to discuss.

the c1 and sterling was intended to be able to use sten mags as a way to make it more saleable to the british government, they already had mags and ammo laying around for them afterall.

seems after a quick google search that some guys mp40s will accept sten mags and vice versa, and some dont fit, depends on the manufacturer

None of my various Sten mags insert into the MP40 but the MP40 mags all just fit into the Sten, no google search done here, all hands on.

The Lads don't look enthusiastic for the task. Note the Volksturmgewer at the left.

He's probably telling them about the new Vunder Veapons which the Fuhrer has up his sleeve that are going go turn the tide any day now.

Note the scoped K98 in the center, and it almost looks like two StmGw mags taped together!

The tab markings on the solder to the left looks like SS markings.

Cant quite tell with the distance in the photo, but it almost looks like his collar tabs don't have any Sig Runes (SS) on them? Just the Pips indicating "Obersharfuehrer" (Senior Company Leader/ Company Sergeant Major)...

Perhaps he is a non-Germanic SS Legionnaire?

Also, RRCo. good eyes, spotting that Scoped K98. What an eclectic mix of weapons there! A Volksgewehr 5, and MG42, and a Low/High Turret? K98 Snipers Rifle.

By the look on the guys' faces, the fellow above might be telling them that the Allies were seen bringing up a couple of artillery pieces during the night, and would likely be obliterating their position any moment now.

Vee slept like babies, danke.
Ja ze Oder is particularily stunning zis morgen.
