What would do this????

Man they've got some tough and determined mosquitoes in those parts! But I guess that's what happens when your tank crew are the only mammals in the area and mama wants to lay her eggs in the swampwater...

My mate is rebuilding one that was rescued from a military range-took nearly a year to get all the concrete out of it!

And this is how it looks now (well, last week)

Still got plenty of work to do to get her back on the road but its nice to be bolting bits back on instead of struggling to get parts off.

It never ceases to amaze me what he has. My 9 year old son is always wanting to go over to his workshop at the weekend and constantly reminds me that "well, he is your coolest friend!"

That is a garage full of awesome. What the hell does this guy do for a living? Run the Imperial War Museum?

The jeeps are great and everything, but those trucks give me wood I could build a garage of my own with.

he fights rommel obviously, those crates on the racking contain several crusader 3 tanks in pieces awaiting assembly

Ah, yes - Der Panzermotorrad Mk 1k (for Kurtz - you should have seen the long wheelbase version). Lost in a tragic bus jumping accident.

Meanwhile, strapped to some Yank radio operator in 1943:

How much can you name?

Dude was a Pathfinder, probably assault section member at leading or trailing edge.

Short Range Radio, flares / smoke, plus full sized rifle, pistol, four knives and four grenades, compass, annddd...

a panel marker; the folded up light coloured "tarp" at the top of the photo, between the main and reserve parachutes, shown with grommets and pins to hold it on the ground. By it's size I'd say it is not the DZ Indicator- that would be larger.

The Drop Zone Indicator; shaped as a letter "T", "A", etc, is to be placed at the DZ IP ( Impact Point).

[This is where the first jumper lands ( in theory).]

The shape and direction of the DZ Indicator is known to the aircrews, and identifies the individual DZ.

The DZ Indicator is set out by the DZ Controller Party, who would carry a much larger Air / Ground / Air radio. So this load is not for the DZ Controller.

Security Section would carry more and heavier weapons, to protect the DZ against enemy approach.

Support Section would carry other means of gathering troops into their DZ RVs- flags, flares, smoke grenades, etc.

Cheers!

Ben

Page 113 of the book From D-Day to VE Day - The Canadian Soldier, lists some of the main messages or signals the panels can tell overhead aircraft by arranging on the ground.

Good info, Ben - thanks very much for that. :)

Here's the Standard Beaverette Mk. III:

Not enormously different from the kind of rigs our lads drove around Beautiful Scenic Asscrackistan, at least in several minor ways.

New Zealand Infantry performs maori haka for fallen comrades - YouTube

Maoris are a scary lot. The haka is so acutley manly it causes spontaneous ovulation in women. True story.

Here's New Zealanders one war earlier:

...and in WW2, doing much the same:

If it was a choice between going up against the Ghurkas and going up against the Maori... I'd choose to strategically re-position rearwards, with undignified haste.

No-one really wants to be the guest of honour at a feed of Pakeha with Puha, even if there is Pineapple and Breadfruit as well.

The Pakeha just could be someone you know!

OTOH, nice PzKpfw III(N) Sd. Kfz 141/2! The heaviest-gunned version of the III, precursor to the St.G. III with the heavier L/43 and L/48 guns.

FWIW, I think the III with the L/60 5cm must be one of the iconic German tanks of all time.

Video with some photo's. Interesting.

Those interested in the fighting qualities of the Maori might consider a couple of films:

- "River Queen" starring Keifer Sutherland who played an Irish mercenary fighting in one of the Maori Wars. Lots of action with ML Enfields, Yataghan bayonets and those wonderful Maori facial tattoos. Sutherland is armed with a rare Terry carbine.

- "Once Were Warriors". A more modern setting, dealing with the terrible price of alcoholism amongst Maoris.

Aaaa, you beat me to the caption! Yeah, but it was the furless hands that gave him away.
Put an old pair of gardening gloves on him and he'd make a good scare-crow (although
standing out in the middle of a field with a rifle might arouse suspicion).

From the video Gibbs505 posted, can someone tell me what song is being sung throughout? Taps? Please...anyone?

There's more!!

In the 'work in progress' workshop.

Another finished project. The Hellcat had a role in the recent film Fury.
