Picture of the day

It's the Nitrogen Lamp.

No peeking at the pic properties.

IIRC they used one of those in the old "Flash Gordon" serials at the 'Saturday Matinees'. MING the MERCILESS used one like that in the 1930s to attack Earth all the way from The Planet Mongo. He called it his "Nitrogen Lamp".

Wandering around town this afternoon I took a couple of quick snaps - couldn't get the best shots, but it was sorta guerrilla photography.

Anyone from Calgary should recognize these objects. They've been sitting in the exact same spot for a couple decades now, slowly crumbling from neglect and an idiot business that would rather let them rot than sell them at a reasonable price.

Mark 24 acoustic homing torpedo diagram

Mark_24_mine_diagram.jpg

Japanese submarine I-52 was sunk by an air dropped Mk 24 acoustic homing torpedo on 24 June 1944 west of the Cape Verde islands.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_submarine_I-52_(1942)

The sonobuoy recording of the last few moments of I-52's sound still survives in the US National Archives in Washington D.C. in the form of two thin film canisters marked "Gordon wire No. 1" and "Gordon wire No. 2" dated 24 June 1944. The wire from Taylor's attack has not been found; however, a set of 78 rpm vinyl recordings that include segments of Taylor's wire recordings has been located. These records were produced during the war for training pilots. On the wire and vinyl recordings Lieutenant Gordon can be heard talking to his crew, along with the sound of a torpedo exploding, and metal twisting.

Maybe the sound of people screaming, too?

Yeah, it had a few different code names and it was also officially a 'mine'. I am not sure but I think the MK 37, was used by the RCN until the late 1980s. It may still be in use but I am not sure.

Practice mortar bombs for the Anti submarine Mortar MK 10 aboard the HMAS Vampire (museum ship).

Not being from Calgary, which business?

Crown Surplus in Inglewood. I remember those vehicles being there since at least the 80's. They used to be in much better condition. Decades sitting out in the elements has reduced them to what you see.
