Should have known Dan would have been the one to figure out it was Rudel.
9 air to air victories in a Stuka is actually a pretty impressive feat. But the rest of his stats from the war, really bring home what he was capable of as a pilot. 519 tank kills, 1 battleship, 1 destroyer, 1 cruiser, 70 or so other ships of varying descriptions, 4 armoured trains, 150+ artillery/anti-aircraft/anti-tank emplacements. Over 2500 sorties over the course of the war. Injured on Jan 1, 1945, requiring the amputation of his right leg. Was back flying missions by the end of March, and flew right up until the surrender of German forces.
And yes, very much a douchebag. After the war he kept busy smuggling key Nazi officials to Argentina and hiding their identity (including Mengele), did some gun running for pretty much anyone who would pay (upstanding world leaders like Pinochet and Peron among them), was a spokesman/candidate for various German "We're not Nazis, really..." nationalist right wing parties right up until his death in 1982.
Strikes me as someone who didn't enjoy being bored.
There's some speculation that that's Rudel, too proud to catch a ride, walking back to Germany.
