1/1 scale film set in Onomichi for Yamato live action movie. I actually visited the set, and though they only built 1/3 of the ship, it only spurred me on to imagine what it must have felt like to stand on the real deck of the Yamato or Musashi.

Mr. D, is that a Nagato class battleship? Interesting, I thought they were all on the bottom of the ocean.
Details if you have them?

Too many turrets for Nagato, I am guessing South Dakota class. But l am wrong. Please tell me!

Sorry for the confusion guys, I went back and labeled the photos as best as I could.

REMEMBERING IWO JIMA…On this day in 1945, U.S. Marines of the 28th Regiment, 5th Div, raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi.

“An envious Army officer from Almond’s staff chided Chesty Puller: ‘Ever since that flag-raising picture on Iwo Jima got published, I’m convinced you Marines would rather carry a flag into battle than a weapon.’ Puller regarded the man icily, ‘Not a bad idea,’ he growled, 'a man with a flag in his pack and the desire to run it up on an enemy position isn’t likely to bug out!’”

Note: Marines also have a tradition of capturing flags
Re Sandino, Nicaragua, 1932, etc.

^^^Have you read Captain Joseph Enright's book about the sinking of HIJNS Shinano on her maiden voyage?

I have not, I've read "A Glorious Way to Die" about Yamato, but I will have to look up that book you mentioned.

Yup, watched it in theatres in Japan actually. I even visited the film set and stood on the deck......even though it was a replica, the parts that we could see were breathtaking. The movie unfortunately wasn't done as well as hoped. It had a huge budget, but the CGI was terrible and made live shots even seem fake. Granted, it was done some time ago, but I found the film poorly executed. What a waste of such a massive set (they built about 1/3 of the ship in 1/1 scale).

No problem I war gamed WW2 Pacific with 1/2400 minis back in the 80s and had a bit if an obsession with cruiser battles.
Haha, RC? There are some impressive battleship RC builds out there, I'm talking massive and heavily detailed RC models of these ships....just incredible.

I have "A Glorious way to Die",.. it is a good book. IIRC they were kamakazied on a one-way ticket to Okinawa to sink as many of the American Transports and vessels surrounding the Island as possible till ammo or luck ran out, then beach the ship and the crew would take everything they could carry and fight as Infantry. US carrier aircraft found her and the rest is history. Theses ships absorbed tremendous punishment before sinking, and I always felt the BeeHive anti aircraft bird shot for the 460cm guns was kind of cool.

Nope, these models are zinc/lead. An aircraft carrier is about 2 inches long, done with set of rules like board gaming. Mixture of model making and Risk with far more detailed rules.

Attributed to Admiral Yamamoto, Commander of the Japanese Navy, following the attack on Pearl Harbor; " I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

Ah yes, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. I just found out something that sent shivers up my spine, he's from my wife's hometown and I'm going to check out his museum next time I'm there.

Our ancestors hated each other and were killing each other for centuries right up until WWII. My grandfather, who fought against them, would be rolling over in his grave if he found out I was making babies with the enemy, lol!
