Picture of the day

I've often pondered the same thing. Might have made a difference. Doesn't take more than a few minutes for someone of average intelligence to figure out the operation of a Mauser bolt action rifle. Until then, it still makes for a good club.

If only more had. I remember a thread here a while ago mentioning a picture of one concentration camp guard, and how his rifle was on safe, and was probably not even chambered. Any one of the poor souls could have grabbed it with some help before it was able to be made to fire.

They were all so psychologically beaten, it didn't even cross their minds. One would have to have an intimate knowledge of firearms to pick it out, and form plan.
If only more did.

Glider troops? It must be like riding the world's highest roller coaster knowing that the last 2000 foot ride from the top is missing the track!

Glider troops were not issued Paratrooper jackets and trousers. These guys, I believe, were Pathfinders.

So add "first in" to the bad ass quote.

Don't forget. Many of the people that went to those camps had been stigmatized by their religion NOT to embrace violence no matter the consequences. There are many mainstream media outlets to this day that completely agree with that premise and urge people not to fight back but let Big Brother protect them, no matter the consequences. Social engineering/brainwashing doesn't work on FREE THINKERS, that young lady knew her demise was imminent and decided she would take some of the enemy with her to the grave. Good for her and good for those that can overcome the DO NOT FIGHT BACK prompting by those that have never faced danger.

So they had a easier than Glider troops.....they got to get out of the aircraft BEFORE it crashed!! :)

Good points--so the guy would rather practice and study aerial tactics than go to the bar and get drunk/laid with his squadron-mates. Sounds like a pretty hardcore guy to me.
Either that, or I wonder if he had a mild form of Aspergers or something like that, which allowed him to really focus at the expense of social relationships.....hmmmm

Yes, that sums it up pretty well.

IIRC studies showed that about 75% of fighter pilots, at least on our side, were mostly just "there", rather than actively seeking to engage the enemy. To some extent that may be a result of the formation flying tactics, but that was no doubt taken into account by those who did the studies. One could understand those who were the "hunters" having a certain contempt for the "passengers". Beurling seems to have had plenty, but he probably also had a lot of PTSD to deal with.

This is one you don't see mentioned often,

Double set triggers are very similar to each other.
Have a couple Kragujevac Yugoslav/Serbia Mauser 98 action hunting rifles with them.

Probably stolen back by the original owner.

Could be....its very popular to denigrate Castro etc etc ... but folks need to take a deep breath and have a long look at the stinking bastard he replaced - Batista

So what?...Stalin replaced Hitler in Eastern Europe....and the NKVD replaced the SS...ask Eastern Europeans of the appropriate generation just how well that went.

Hateful goddamned device, that.

Getting shot is one thing. Getting blown up is another. But lighting people on fire is just feckin' cruel.

I know I appear to be making a case for "relative evils" here, but flamethrowers hold zero appeal for me. They hit on a very human fear (we've repsected fire and what it can do for millenia) and exploit it. I have to think that seeing the neighbouring cave lit up would often be enough to crack the will of the lads in the next cave over, and they'd run like hell so they'd never have to face it. It speaks volumes for the willpower and Bushido programming of the Japanese that they didn't crack more regularly when faced with flamethrowers.

Damned effective, but vicious and hateful things, graceless appliances, no aesthetic considerations, no "pride of ownership". A 1911 is a handsome thing, an Enfield has a certian brutish charm. MP44s are sleekly utilitarian. But this?

Designed by the world's angriest plumber. Ugly and nothing else.

Don't forget, the German's were the first to use Gas but thought using a shotgun in trench warfare as inhumane.
Flamethrower's got the job done with minimum loss to friendly's. And that make's it OK by me

Fun fact Canada still to this day hasn't signed the treaty prohibiting the use of flamethrowers, which means should we wish it, we can use it. It is also interesting all those vets who survived WWII, and seen all sorts of horrible weapons up to nukes, the only thing they actually wanted banned was flamethrowers.
