Picture of the day

Standard drill with the 42 was to fire no more than 250 rounds from a barrel, then change barrels. Each gun was issued with 3 spares, changing took about 3 seconds (I have done it in 4).

They followed this program religiously. As a result, it was extremely rare to run into a 42 with a bum barrel.

250 rounds from a 42 is a barrel change every 10 to 12 seconds of firing time.
.

I wonder if they were issued with oven mitts? Idiot me...3 Barrels cool while one is in use, or 3 barrels in the turf, and soon to be waiting for #5?

The first MG42s captured by the Americans were in North Africa. They were amazed that none had burned out barrels.

NAA.

Good one! I used to go to that place back then, and you're not
far off. The big store down near the "J" Street bridge in Victoria used to have
sales of Lee Enfields stacked in 45 gallon barrels in the late 60's.
Prices were well under 20 bucks ea. back then.

Likely North Africa.

British troopies guarding a dump of captured Italian equipment.

If there is a photo on this thread that I would like to CRAWL INTO, I think this would be it!

All those Carcanos! All those Revellis!

Time for a good cry.......

I remember, as a kid, my Uncle John Gardner, telling my Dad what those MG42's sounded like when you were on the receiving end. He made a sound to imitate them. He was a big, robust man with a faint British accent. He told my Dad that it would, "Make any man want to $h!t his pants!"
