Was that Mulroney or Chrétien that thought it would be a great cost saving, selling our Chinooks to the Dutch, what a cluster ##### that was

Mulroney.

So we know where the money went...or at least where much of it DIDN'T go.

And pic thread so:

Yes it was Mulroney. I was in the puzzle palace on the Rideau at the time and spoke against this and wasn't well received. A little more than a decade later we were in Afghanistan bumming rides from the Dutch on these same helicopters.:rey2

I couldn't blame the air force at the time because they were eating their young to keep the fighters going. The army wanted them, but wasn't able to pay for them given their own starvation diet.:sok2

Mulroney was an enormous cluster f--k. He was also crooked and should have gone to jail over some of the shenanigans he pulled. Mr Harper disliked that particular man very much and was quite open about it. Very unusual for Mr Harper.

There was a bit more to the story than just finances.

A couple of the same model Chinooks that Canada was using had crashed because of design flaw issues. Parts were also hard to get and they were definitely horrendously expensive to maintain at 100% operational condition.

IMHO, the crashes were a scapegoat reason to dump them. Mulroney was openly antagonistic towards Canada's military.

Mulroney, just like Jean Charest, was just a Liberal in Blue guise, who couldn't make it in the Liberal Party, so he went PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE instead and after umpteen scandals, which brought about the creation of the REFORM PARTY OF Canada ran what was left of the party into the ground.

GIB's already left along with the nosecone. One wonders what happened there.

Ah - the link explains:

66-0249 (c/n 1911) "ZF" with 31st TTW, 308th TFTS, based at Homestead AFB, Florida: crashed into Gulf of Mexico, south of Tyndall AFB, Florida on March 22, 1985. Both crew ejected. One was later named as (pilot) Capt. M. Bauhuin.

On the 18th of November 1968 whilst flying for the 433 TFS, this aircraft was struck my 37mm anti-aircraft fire whilst returning to RTAB Ubon. This damaged the aircraft and the pilot ordered the WSO to eject. After ejecting the pilot noticed the aircraft become more controllable and thus made a safe return to Base for a wheels up landing.

It must be a bit sobering when your pilot says "Get out, Jimmy, you're making her fly weird."

A beautiful Vickers "K" in what appears to be an improvised Scarf mount, very light and "handy" but obsolete as an aircraft gun before the start of WWII, never the less she saw use through out WWII, was fitted to the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Fairy Swordfish torpedo bomber among others. The Vickers "K" gained fame in the hands of the SAS in North Africa but that is another tale. I see we have at least one AG (Air Gunner) and a Polish pilot in the photo, I wonder where and when this photo was taken? My own example (Vickers "K") lives on my desk, she maintains peace in the office. :) Every "Boss" should have at least one.

My not very educated guess is those are 300 or 301 Squadron crews. If I'm not mistaken those round hats on picture are French pattern worn by PAF in France.

They were the only Polish Squadrons operating Fairey Battle that possibly warranted training on it.Battles had both gun ring much like this and Vickers K

Then again there was 309 Sqr with Westland Lysanders.I'm not sure if Lysanders had Vickers K.Most of pictures I've seen had something gun looking a lot like Browning.

Speaking of Lysander...

Excellent pictures Diopter.Notice Cooper bombs still in use.Quantity of those bombs was supplied to Finland along with Lysanders sold there.

How long were Cooper bombs produced?I doubt they still had them in stocks since ww1.Who produced them?

As for wheel spats mounted guns there was few planes designed with those.Afaik only Lysander was mass produced with them and used in war.
