It was an aircraft that demanded the undivided attention of the pilot. 46% loss rate in Canadian service to Class "A" accidents - 110 aircraft, 37 fatalities. 21 were attributed to foreign object damage (14 of which were birds), 14 were in flight engine failures, 6 were faulty maintenance, 9 were mid air collisions. 32 struck the ground flying at low level in poor weather conditions.

Just saw one of these at the museum today... Quite the dart...

Yep, photo recce pods on these 104's so would be a 439 Tiger Sqn photo op day. Pic probably taken in Germany as 439 was in Lahr and moved to Baden in around 1970. I worked on them as a fitter and was lucky enough to get 2 rides in them. That is something I'll never forget. This pic was pre camo so don't know when it was taken, certainly before 1970 though.

I once work with a man by the name of Bill Stewart. In his youth he flew on Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers off HMS Arc Royal.
He got sick with something just before the encounter with Bismarck and missed out on the excitement.

Immigrated to Canada and eventually worked with Vickers/Canadair. One of his tasks was drafting changes to the CF104 tail plane to reduce flutter after the bomb(s) were dropped at low altitude and hopefully keep it from ending up like a lawn dart in the dirt.
