Picture of the day

If you're interested in what it was like serving in a Stuart or, rather, a "Honey" - the British name for the M3 - in the western desert campaign have a read of "Brazen Chariots". The Stuart was also the "Haunted Tank" in the comic book of the same name, capable thanks to the power invested in it via the ghost of Jeb Stuart, of putting Tiger tanks out of commission using only its 30mm cannon.

37mm gun. Loved Haunted Tank in the Sgt Rock comics.

Nice vintage color pic. I've been out on the tank ranges at Ft Knox and the color of the dirt, like a lot of the south, is reddish.

You see a hint of that reddish colour in this pic, also from Fort Knox, 1942.

HMS Agincourt
The only battleship with 7 main gun turrets. 7 x 2 12inch main guns.
The turrets were named after the days of the week instead of A&B in front, P&Q in back.

Ordered by Brasil as Rio de Janeiro, couldn't afford it.
Builders sold to Ottoman Empire as Sultan Osman I
WW1 breaks out and british realize they are selling a battleship to a then possible ally member of the axis powers.
Taken/seizedby Britain before completion.

One pictures the meeting between the Brazilian Naval Attache and the folks down at the shipyard.

"Blimey! HOW many turrets?"

"Twelve, with very large guns in each, preferably six or more guns per turret. You can do this, yes? It is possible?"

"Naow, mate - it ain't even bleedin' reasonable. Best we can do is maybe two per turret and four turrets. That's "off the shelf" spec, yeah? Anyfing else and we're into bespoke, and we ain't bleedin' 'olland and 'olland..."

Negotiations went through the night, and at 4:45 in the morning, hands were shaken over the recipe of seven turrets, two guns per. Then the Brazilians said they had to just pop out to an ATM for a minute, be right back... That was 1913 and they're not back yet.

The brits named their turrets a, b, x & y. Q was the center turret Can't see why the would have changed the system for this when they could have done a, b, for the front two; q, r, for the middle two and x, y, z for the last three!
Apparently it was spectacular firing all guns at once! Other ships crews at Jutland watch to see if she would roll over!!

You mean some aren't. It might just take one complaint from an "offended" person to result in an order to cease & desist flying the flag.

Recently on the toob there was an item about a black church with a stained glass window of Stonewall Jackson. Seems Stonewall conducted Sunday School for the slaves on his plantation and was known to be a fair and kindly owner. They are able to separate the man from the soldier.

This whole 'get rid of the Stars & Bars and statues commemorating Civil War heroes' is just so much PC bull#### and rewriting of history, right out of Orwell's "1984". The abolition of slavery was NOT the reason for the war, it was fought over states rights. The agrarian economy of the South was based on cotton and cheap labour. Emancipating the slaves in one fell swoop would have destroyed it.

It happened - live with it! Burning Confederate flags and removing statues isn't going to change that. Long Live Dixie! Up the Confederacy! Down with Political Correctness!

A very good white point of view. But do you really think that blacks in the US should get all teary eyed and salute that flag? The states rights you are talking about, along with other things , was the right to keep and enslave other humans. Lots of cultures did the same thing but the enslaved rarely felt very good about it.

How did they get all that stuff in that little tank? Crew armed with M1917 revolvers and two of the crew actually have revolver clip pockets for spare ammo. Are those 100 round drums for the Thompson? And you would think they could have gotten a more photogenic crew.

All that stuff on the right foreground must have been stored external. Even still, if the tank ever rolled, the crew would probably not have moved much considering all the gear and stores.

Yup and like many of us it warped your mind so that you turned into a gun toting sociopath with sadistic tendencies, just like all of our generation that refused to be made out of ticky tacky and look just the same.
