I heard/read somewhere that the German officer was taken somewhere nearby and shot.
That doesn't sound like a very Canadian thing to do..

That was a pretty common statement used by numerous RSM’s over the years.
There could be a sub thread listing some the better phrases used by a RSM, CSM, SWO, BWO, etc over the years. Having ones balls for bookends is probably the most used one though. I remember one SWO who liked to say “If you lie to me I’ll throw you so far into the digger, they will have to pump air to you to breathe.
I recall one about a man who was not keeping in step & the CSM shouting at him, "You look like a duck f-cking a football".

I read somewhere that the Nazi Officer was being very demanding and a real a-hole, so in the existing conditions, it was decided to "neutralize" the problem.
The story was that he was taken out for a walk.........

It might be if they did the Canadian thing and said "sorry" first....
"...... pour encourager les autres". Voltair was right.
I thought the comment was written as to suggest that governments should execute a few leaders in their military occasionally to encourage the rest to perform. Evidently Stalin and Mao Tse Tung took this advice to heart.
If you were implying that it would encourage the rest of the group to be less problematic??????????????
Wasn't that picture taken shortly after they found the Canadian POWs shot in the small courtyard??? Between the POed Canadians and French Partisans looking for revenge, I'm surprised they accepted any surrenders from that group.
As for the pic with Churchill, it's a posed/political pic of him awkwardly "holding" the Thompson, not attaching the magazine. I remember reading a comment he made about being thrilled with the experience but felt it "was rather heavy."

Many folks think the soldier in the white shirt is a French Resistance fighter but he is Canadian (Tpr R.J. Lowe) who had his shirt burned and destroyed earlier in the action.
Would Love to know what Churchill would think of gun control in England now?
If so, he showed compassion which the SS didnt.
