Remember seeing an airshow at NAS Pensacola, home base for the Blue Angels and about 45 miles from Eglin AFB, at that time home base for the Thunderbirds. Show included the Golden Hawks flying the F-86, Thunderbirds in F-100s and the Blues in the F11 Tiger. The GHs were one of the first demonstration teams I remember that would have a furball going on in front of the crowd while two planes slipped away un-noticed, one to each side. The two circled around and came in from behind the crowd, on the deck, balls to the wall right over the top of the crowd. They couldn't have been over 300 feet, my memory would put it lower. The entire crowd went flat on the concrete. In those days the Blues and Thunderbirds did lots of combined shows. The Blues went to Eglin every spring for Armed Forces day, big open house at Eglin and airshow, fire power demonstrations. (Eglin has been home base for AF weapons development for many years). Thunderbirds would come to NAS Pensacola for fall homecoming show of the Blues. Then the bean counters got involved so combined shows are very rare today. I work at NASP, Blues practice every Tues. & Wed., just have to look out the window to watch.
