Picture of the day

13 days to go before Christmas. Out of sheer orneryness, I have abstained from partaking in "Christmas spirit" until now. This year I saw my first Christmas ad on October 25th, which was a new record for me. But now that we're under two weeks to go, it seems appropriate to hit the topic.

"Comrade Commissar - I found this suspicious tree just inside the woods, staying very still. I think it's a Hitlerite spy. I have brought it in for questioning. It will be sure to spill its secrets once we festoon it with decorations to humiliate it..."

Historical fact - dudes with motorcycles get more "trim" than a cabinetmaker.

Looks like the GI versions of the "Charlie Brown Christmas Tree".

While on strike over Xmas and New Years at the BC Hydro "bunker" at SFU in Burnaby, BC, I lopped the top of a nice young fir and we decorated in with beer cans. A grounds maintenance type saw it and asked where I left the rest of the tree as he knew the tree huggers would go ballistic.

I told him that we burned it and he was happy. Then he showed up with a string of lights for us which we ran off a generator. Merry Christmas!

''The gal on the right, above in the motorcycle pic, looks like she could eat corn thru a picket fence! ''

No, that is just Austin Powers older sister.

:) Geez I havent heard that expression in 50 years ... my father had a slight variation on that and would say ‘like eating an apple through a picket fence’

Here's an indifferently designed and assembled cavalry scabbard they had some random dudes throw together:

Do you really want that strap going through rather than around the trigger guard? Of course, if it's slung facing aft and your horse is only going to start galloping if someone's chasing you then there might be method to that madness.

Cavalry probably still makes sense in a mountainous country like Switzerland. :)

Grizz

That was Rambo III, wasn't it?

Lol yes that one too, but the other movie is called "12 strong" I believe, based on special forces after 9/11

Also of Afghanistan, I've been looking for some time to post a article from the 1981 gun digest called
"The Afghan and his Smle" by Jack Lott it's an interesting article that would probably be of interest to members on here but I've been unable to find it

Empty chamber and with safety on would be the way to travel on slopes with horses or mules.

Well, the Nagant revolver has the reputation of being, shall we say, less than useless in battle............:)

I've seen them used under stressful conditions and I can personally attest to their effectiveness. I saw to very large individuals put out of action very quickly with a well worn, but serviceable Nagant revolver.

One was hit in the upper chest. The bullet lodged in the top of his lung, which quickly started filling with blood, he lived but was instantly out of the fray. The second fellow was hit just below the heart. The bullet penetrated the diaphragm, separating the chest cavity from the abdomen. The fellow was dead within a 5 minutes. No exit wounds on either of them and very little external bleeding.

Back in the day that excellent pistol was designed, the purpose was to disable an enemy with a weapon that was light and easily controlled. That's why there was such a proliferation of 22/25/32/9mm pocket pistols back in the day. If the recipient of the bullet didn't die from the initial impact, given the poor sanitary conditions of the time, gangrene and other nasty biological factors finished the job.
