I remember having to read Chaucer.

German & Dutch influence on the English language. Blame the Saxons.

Like many food terms used in English which come from French. Blame the Normans.

Portuguese uses many of the original Indian, Chinese and Japanese terms for the items they traded for.

Always amused when I hear some swear words and derogatory terms in Hawaiian I know are of Portuguese origin.

poor transcription of the original long s. same letter as the first half of the german B that is actually ss and the V is a leftover of converting spoken english to use roman characters. latin used U and V sounds interchangably the same way we have lead and lead with 2 different sounds. double u was to replicate the wynn sound and eventually became its own character. you can see the remains in how russian and german speakers pronounce english words like wagon or vessels

I absolutely agree. If Patton hadn't been sent to North Africa, Monty would still to this day be sitting in Alexandria drinking tea & making excuses to Churchill why not to "counter attack"...again in Sicily, Monty put everything in "low gear" after the landing but Patton hit the "go button" and prevented a German re-build...and then there was the Battle of the Bulge...Monty was the closest battle group by far but was "too busy" getting ready for X-mas...Patton was 300 miles away but again hit the "go button" hard.
The fact is Patton's hard charging attitude continually made Monty's position a "loosing face with Churchill " an untenable situation and goaded him into action.

By the time WW2 ended, the Nagato was the only IJN battleship still floating
The USN high speed transport USS Horace A. Bass APD-124 can be seen alongside in some of the pictures
One of the questions asked of the Nagato crew aboard was the whereabouts of Nagato’s sister-ship Mutsu
On June 8, 1943, Mutsu was moored in the Hashirajima fleet anchorage, when the magazine of her No. 3 turret exploded, sinking the ship
Mutsu's sinking was declared a state secret, surviving crew were sent to locations away from Japan and sworn to secrecy, USN Intelligence did not learn of her sinking until after the war
Nagato was used as a target ship for the Nuclear Tests at Bikini after the war and slowly sank and capsized four days after the "Able" test on the night of July 29, 1946
