For perspective on the U2, the wingspan is a foot more than that of a B-17.

The U2 is wide enough that one wing can be experiencing transonic buffeting at the edge of Mach 1 while the other wing is stalling.

(Granted, this is because the thing operates up in the high-altitude "coffin corner" of the performance envelope where those are only a few knots apart.)

Coffin Corner, yep that topic was brought up often in discussions about the DC8 and B-707 at high altitude.

What is that device that looks like a horn? Alarm siren?

A right click of the mouse reveals:

Men of the Lancashire Fusiliers sit in a muddy puddle on the floor of a front line trench opposite Messines to clean a Lewis gun. Behind them, as the trench bends round to the right, a group of men can be seen standing in the trench, one of them with his bayonet fixed. To the left of the photographs, can be seen the gas alarm horn and wind vane. Several rows of sandbags form the top left-hand edge of the trench.

Ponciano "Sabu" Arida of Santa Maria was the youngest guerilla in the country. He was only eleven (11) years old when he made some heroic deeds in our town. He was the runner of the guerilla spy and supply officer.

Child soldiers are still with us and probably always will be. As we used to say in the middle east, "any 12 year-old with a Kalashnikov will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about the privileges and immunities of the United Nations."

I’m always doing a double take when I notice just how low profile you get with these older weapons. You look at the new stuff and iron sights are a couple of inches above the barrel on most guns, optics sometimes higher, then add bulkier helmets and NVGs etc and your target profile gets way bigger. Look at that top pic, barely anything is poking above the parapet, and for good reason!
