^^^ And some 20 years later, the USAF would do something similar to old C-47's, mounting a whole lot of guns on them and calling them Puff the Magic Dragon.....

These birds might just have been useful for ground support in WWII. Too bad nobody came up with that use for the modified planes back then.

I hate to say it but I just don’t think technology / comms were good enough in WWII. The few times they used heavy bombers as a sort of close air support (ex: during Cobra in Normandy) the results were either counter productive or produced a pile of friendly casualties.

The CF 5 was one of Defence Minister Paul Hellyers brainwaves ,the RCAF wanted the F4 Phantom to replace the age CF 104 Starfighter , but Hellyer and the Liberal cabinet said no

Moving in column in close terrain isn't a good idea.

They were not moving, they have been sitting static, for how many days 2, 3 maybe longer? Ran out of gas, food and due the 30 KM long traffic jam, no resupply from the rear.
Cant go off road, the terrain is wet and they get stuck.
Many of the Russians are intentionally running out of gas/getting stuck in the mud and then using that as an excuse to surrender.
"Good times bad times" utube channel out of Poland has some good commentary on the situation.
