Raymond, AB native Flight Sergeant Robert Mehew Zobell of RCAF 401 Sqn) had a bit of a sh!t time above Dieppe in August '42:

In his Spitfire Mk IX BS 120 (code; YO-S), he engaged a Dornier 17 into which he fired all of his ammunition in return the bomber's gunner replied punching bullets through his rudder, both wings, shattering the Perspex canopy and smashing the gunsight. Despite wounds to his head and a splinter of glass in his eye, he was able to get the aircraft home and safely on the ground.

Flt Sgt. Zobell survived the war and died in 1985, aged 64.

This may look like a clipping issue of two planes from the latest game by EA... but it is a real image of a Fairey Battle training aircraft!

Two WW2 crafts that I could never really appreciate were the Fairey Battle...
Having the highest short-term operational loss for crews (over 50%), no wonder it had the nickname "Flying Coffin".


And the Boulton Paul Defiant, although having many flaws in wasn't as bad as the Battle.
