Picture of the day

Where are these guys? Africa?

I watched an old documentary put together just after WWII. It was put out by the States and the British. Kind of post war propaganda. It was called "The True Glory" or something like that. Amazing footage of D-day and the supplies being offloaded in the days following. Piles of supplies lined the beached. Jerry cans by the hundreds of thousands.

OK guys New day New picture :) Not to sure what type of firearm this is ( I'm pretty sure it is Italian because of the two triggers ) But why have the the magazine pouch on the back and not the front? The middle fella is wearing a German paratroopers helmet too right? correct me if I am wrong guys lol :)

You've got a mix of Luftwaffe Fallschirmjagers and Italian Paratroopers, the Fallshirm is wearing the splinter b camo smock and the Italian the telo mimetico drop smock.

Just LOVE those Vickers-Berthier MGs everywhere! I want one SO bad it ain't even funny.

A bunch of hard-looking Certifiable Lunatics. I'm really glad they were on OUR side!

Reading in an old book about these guys where they actually sneaked into an Afrika Korps camp one day at lunch-time and dumped IPECAC into the soup, got the hell out.

These were the REAL-LIFE "Rat Patrol" but I don't think anyone ever made a movie about them. Too bad; we are left with Hollywood heroics while the REAL heroes are unheralded.

There were several of these "unconventional" groups. The one that is really hard to source information on is Popski's Private Army.

Mostly they liked to use Chevrolet 30-cwt (1-1/2-ton) trucks, carried sand-mats (lengths of PSP) in the back for getting unstuck. There were a whole bunch of Chevy trucks at the dealers in Cairo and Alex; these guys grabbed most of them. Sorry, guys, no Jeeps with Brownings.

Time for a Stella? It is still being made!

The man to the left with the MP40 looks to be wearing a Mk III helmet, the next one over- crouching is wearing a Helmet, Steel, DR (Despatch Rider) MkI and the next one over with the Lee Enfield is wearing a Mk II helmet

I'm pretty sure I have seen at least 2 movies made in 1960's about them.Maybe it was TCM playing them...

I can't remember titles but both of those movies had pretty big stars playing in them and both where excellent time killers.

smeille - I read a nice peace in a ww2 magazine that I subscribe to and it had some really good pictures of the chev trucks with really big balloon tires for crawling over the sands :) I will see if I can find some pictures without scanning the magazine lol :)

Cheers
Joe

For the desert war,one of my favorites is:"Play Dirty", 1969, Michael Caine, Nigel Davenport. Worth a look if you can find it. Also "Raid on Rommel" 1971, Richard Burton. Amazing how these British thespians can elevate a low-budget war movie...maybe it's because Burton was a WW2 RAF vet, and Caine saw active service during the Korean ('police action') War.

I'll second 'Play Dirty'. Another good movie for that theater of operations is 'The Desert Rats'. It is more about the story of the first seige of Tobruk, but there is a good raid scene in it. There are also a lot of SMLE's, so make sure you have the box of tissues handy. Best line of the movie."Fix bayonets, you desert rats!"

Ok guys new day new picture :) This on is a Navajo code talker, But whats puzzling me is the type of firearm the fella has looks like a Thompson barrel but smaller magazine (9mm)
any info on the type of firearm ? :)

If my memory serves me correctly 32 years ago Stella tasted like shiite! What makes you think it tastes any better today? Fricken warm camel piss.
