Thompson Drums

Thompson 1928A1s with Type C mags: 100 rounds apiece.

Looks like the 1942 gas mask.

You do not want these guys p*ssed at you: loaded up, that thing weighed about 17 pounds. They just could be looking for an opportunity to lighten it a couple pounds!

.

Those are L drums. 50 rounds only. The C drum is much larger.

Jim.

And I always wondered why you never see Marines {aren't they??} with their chin straps buckled...now I know. (had he been strapped in, that shrapnel would have likely nearly torn his head off )...that's if the bucket was even being worn when it was struck.

Is that 4 helmets & 3 guys [I hope not!] or is the guy in the forefront holding the liner?

that and the fact that use a chinstrap to break a neck easily

Yeah, THEN you had to load it all back in and stow it properly and all the rest of that.

Going into actual combat, there was a lot more than that for the experienced crews; every available cubic f*cking MILLIMETER was full of ammo. Thank Gawd there was a big area to dump your empties: something called a "Europe".
.

You're also forgetting all the extra stuff that they would hang off the outside of the tank too. Extra track sections for more armour, camo netting, shovels, personal kit, fuel and water cans, a few rifleman, and my favorite, a small cooker box that uses the exhast to heat things up.

Looks like I'll have to dig out the scanner and scan some of the sherman in combat pictures that I've got.

Good day Gunnutz :) New day new picture :) Everything a Sherman tank crew needs!

That is a lot more then I would have thought they carried, but looking at it, it makes total sense. I also agree with the above statement that every possible area would be filled with ammo, one can only imagine that in open war, the armaments in that photo would be rapidly depleted.
